░░
░░ In the beginning, Landon Wordswell was a warrior.
░░
░░ His rhymes were weapons, and whenever he stepped into the arena of combat
░░ to battle-rap his opponents, he had one mission: to destroy them with
░░ barbs, insults and braggadocio. It got to the point where the West Coast
░░ hip-hop artist, who comes to KnoxvilleÆs Old City for a show next week at
░░ The Pilot Light, knew little more than conquest, he told The Daily Times
░░ this week.
░░
░░ ôAll I was doing was battle-rapping; even when I was making a song, I was
░░ rapping against these invisible rappers,ö Wordswell said. ôOne day I
░░ ended up turning the television on, and (hip-hop artist) Common was
░░ talking. They said, æWhat makes you want to talk about the things you
░░ talk about?Æ And he said, æI can talk about all the things that all the
░░ other rappers are talking about, or I can talk about battling a person
░░ and breaking that person down, or I can make something thatÆs going to
░░ last for a while and change someoneÆs life or change someoneÆs
░░ perspective.Æ
░░
░░ ôI started thinking about what I was doing. A thousand years down the
░░ line, if someone digs down in the dirt and finds my tapes, can they get a
░░ feel for what we were going through at the time? ThatÆs when I decided I
░░ didnÆt want to do that anymore. I wanted to do something more important,
░░ to try and get into the heart of it a little more ù where to put the
░░ proper hooks and bridges, where to let the beat breathe at. ThatÆs when I
░░ decided to become more of a songwriter than a battle rapper, or a rapper
░░ at all.ö
░░
░░ And so Wordswell began a period of transformation thatÆs led him toward
░░ the light of socially conscious and personally vulnerable hip-hop.
░░ ThereÆs still the confidence thatÆs almost a prerequisite for the genre ù
░░ heÆs not afraid to brag about rhyming circles around other rappers ù but
░░ thereÆs also a yin and yang of tenderness and ferocity that comes from
░░ the heart of a man who sees himself, his history and his community
░░ through new eyes.ôI started hanging out with people a lot more,ö he said.
░░ ôBy nature, IÆm an introvert for sure, 100 percent, so when I started
░░ touring, I started meeting more people and getting out of my shell. I
░░ would have these conversations with people, and they were getting me high
░░ off of the energy. I would talk to people for a very long time, for hours
░░ at a time, and then I would take these topics. How did it feel? How does
░░ it relate to people, to me and my family? And every time, I would sit
░░ down with a beat and let it play for hours, thinking about these things
░░ that were on my mind, and then IÆd start writing.ö
░░
░░ His first album, ôThe Mourning After Pill,ö landed on a list of the Top
░░ 20 most downloaded albums of March 2013 on Bandcamp; even earlier, while
░░ rapping under the stage name Youngs, he had put an album titled ôRevenge
░░ of the Soulö in the No. 2 position on the Japanese hip-hop charts. HeÆs
░░ struck up a friendship with Gift of Gab of the hip-hop duo Blackalicious,
░░ and heÆs continued to cultivate a crew of like-minded peers throughout
░░ the country, including Mr. Ill and Earl Grae of East TennesseeÆs hip-hop
░░ community.
░░
░░ His most recent release, 2016Æs ôPrayer and Whiskey,ö is his most
░░ personal body of work to date, much of it stemming from a crisis of
░░ conscience surrounding fatherhood and relationships, he said.
░░
░░ ôI was about to quit rapping at that point. I was pretty much done,ö he
░░ said. ôI got to a crossroads where I was like, æIÆve got a son now; maybe
░░ I need to go back to work and be home more.Æ I was living in two
░░ different places ù in San Francisco and Eugene, Ore. ù and going back and
░░ forth was depleting time away from my son. My girlfriend lived in San
░░ Francisco and my son in Oregon, and I was touring a lot, going to see my
░░ son when I got done and flying out to see her once in a while.ôIt was
░░ just a thing where I was ready to make a totally different move in my
░░ life. I didnÆt want to keep drinking until I passed out, and some friends
░░ in Oregon told me, æMan, youÆve just gotta meditate.Æ IÆm not really that
░░ religious, to be honest, but I started doing it a lot, and I considered
░░ it a prayer session.ö
░░
░░ He was also writing, letting the things on his heart flow from there to
░░ fingers to page, and in the creation of ôPrayer and Whiskey,ö he evolved
░░ beyond the artist grappling with those spiritual crises in the songs
░░ themselves. It was a therapeutic process, he said, and on the other side
░░ of it, it felt like something of a rebirth. HeÆs continued to work ever
░░ since, and these days heÆs using his art to address topics and issues on
░░ the outside, he added.
░░
░░ ôI just wrote a song IÆll release the day the tour starts, and it pretty
░░ much talks about all of it ù my son, where I am with him, his mom,
░░ politics, the way I feel about the whole racial stir thatÆs happening
░░ right now,ö Wordswell said. ôThese are the things IÆm wrestling with, and
░░ every time I put pen to paper, itÆs a lot more political now. IÆm
░░ worrying less about relating and more about getting my point across.ö
