Navigating through the turbulent waters of underground progressive house, Lanvary arrives at Particles with a debut EP that Voltaire himself would draw inspiration from as Micromegas provides a sublime twin-track musical vignette. Describing themselves as a 'double-headed dragon' Alex and Andrew form the constituent parts of the Lanvary whole. Approaching their craft from divergent musical vectors, the duo began experimenting with sound in a melting pot of ideas whose distillate has found success in both the live and production arenas over a number of years. Regulars on Proton and Frisky Radio, Lanvary have already cut their teeth on the live stage playing warm up gigs for Above and Beyond in 2011. Imaginative and creative in their studio work, the pair has contributed a plethora of original works for labels including Mistique, Underphunk and latterly, Stellar Fountain, Silk Textures and Suffused Music, over a five-year production evolution. Now, debuting on Particles, after what they deem a lengthy intermission Lanvary now emerge from their studio with Micromegas charting a new path through an evolution of sound. The title track itself is a driving, fast-paced affair that builds in anthemic qualities through the use white noise risers and filtered pads. A rock steady bass line supplies an anchor point while distant melodies gradually come to the fore post-breakdown as a loquacious vocal cut reminiscent of Terrence McKenna provides an added layer of intrigue to juxtapose developing bass and melodic themes. Partner track Moby Dick continues the literary based narrative as the metronomic precision of a clicking kick drum gives way to undulating and richly textured soundscapes that envelop the listener in warm waters. Building effortlessly from the mid-point a soft chord sequence hits its stride as an occasional whale-song spot effect filters through the low-slung percussive groove to give resonance to the track title. A seminal work to accompany Voltaire and Melville, Lanvary has provided a deep and meaningful addition to their library through Micromegas.
