Larry Kucharz's latest foray into electronic keyboard
choral works is another fine effort on his part.
Basically, CyberChoralColors is a three-part excursion
into lush (and not always minimal) soundscapes,
dominated by male and female choral samples of the type
he has used on other recent recordings, such as
ComputerChoral Green Prints and Digichoral Blue
Portraits. On his latest release, though, the choral
voices are more in the forefront at certain times. In
fact, the middle section of the album, five Organum
"colors" sound like pure (and dramatic!) choral works
and you'd probably have a difficult time distinguishing
them from the "real thing."
The other two sections of the CD are the opening six
"Cyber" movements (which most closely resemble the type
of previous synth-choral work Larry has been releasing
recently) and the closing three "Fugal" (as in the
classical term "fugue") movements. Personally, I least
enjoy the fugues, simply because the fugue motif is
quite dramatic at times and grabs your attention more
directly (so, this statement of mine is a reflection of
a personal preference and does not indicate any
criticism of Kucharz's fugue compositions or
performances). My favorite pieces on the album are the
opening six tracks - the "Cyber" section.
"Cyber Dusk" (track two) and "Cyber Fog" are both
appropriately ethereal (and, in the latter case,
mysterious), filled with shimmering keyboards and
heavenly choral voices. "Cyber Fog" is the more
"shadowy" of the two, of course. "Cyber Dawn" is
gloriously exhultant, as deep baritone male voices
counterpoint against the soprano female voices as well
as an undercurrent of celestial strings. You can almost
picture the sun beginning its slow traverse of the sky
in the east, slowly but majestically painting the
horizon pink and gradually a bright shade of blue.
"Cyber Night" is ushered in with serene female choral
voices, similar to Kucharz's earlier recordings, such as
his fantastic Unit 25: Dark Red. This particular track
is more minimal than others on this album, as choral
notes are held for long periods of time (adding an
otherworldly quality to the eerie realism of the sampled
choirs - after all, who can hold a note that long but an
angel?).
The Organum "colors" are short tracks all between one
and two minutes in length, sometimes exploring dramatic
fluctuations in the choral samples as the assembled
voices swoop and soar from high to low (yet never in
such as a way as to be pretentious). Also, I was not
able to discern anything but the choral voices on these
tracks (there are no accompanying synths). The Fugal
selections are well-performed (the opening fugue, "Fugal
Red," opens in extremely dramatic fashion, in
particular). "Fugal Green" features Larry Fast-like
harpsichordish synths laying down a positively sprightly
opening salvo of notes, played against a choir of alto,
tenor and what sound like baritone voices. "Fugal Gold"
closes the album with a thirteen minute musical
exploration, allowing for a deeper examination of the
fugue motif.
I admire Larry Kucharz's ability to both continue
development of his "usual" synth choral work while also
incorporating some decidely new composing and performing
musical styles. I think that as I play CyberChoralColors
more and more, I will warm up to the Fugal section (even
as I write this review, I am hearing more and more to
endorse those particular songs). The "Cyber" section of
the CD is trademark Kucharz magic and if you are a fan
of his previous choral recordings, this section alone
will prove more than satisfying enough to make
purchasing the album a rewarding decision on your part -
