Fans of his work ║ │ │║ with Civil War, Astral Doors, and LoinÆs Share ║ │ │║ should already know the basic template of Evil ║ │ │║ Deluxe. JohanssonÆs omnipresent scraggly Dio ║ │ │║ impersonation continues to run rampant over ║ │ │║ music thatÆs settled in the meeting ground ║ │ │║ between heavy metal, power metal, and AOR. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Yet despite the predictability, Evil Deluxe ends ║ │ │║ up being the perfect storm of JohanssonÆs most ║ │ │║ prominent projects. The bouncy tempos and ║ │ │║ symphonic flourishes on songs like ôEstoniaö ║ │ │║ blow anything Astral Doors has ever done out of ║ │ │║ the water. The hard rock influence on others ║ │ │║ like ôKings and Queensö and ôBurningö help it ║ │ │║ feel more grounded and accessible than Civil ║ │ │║ War. ItÆs blatantly obvious when a song like ║ │ │║ ôHow the West was Wonö was written with a ║ │ │║ specific project in mind, but the album flows ║ │ │║ surprisingly well as a whole. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ This perfect storm approach is also reflected in ║ │ │║ the songwriting. The mix of upbeat rockers, ║ │ │║ mid-tempo marches, and speed metal blasts is ║ │ │║ nothing new, but the hooks are more impactful ║ │ │║ than JohanssonÆs other bands. Some of that may ║ │ │║ have to do with strong performances but it ║ │ │║ honestly comes down to the choruses and ║ │ │║ structures just being that well written. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ The musicianship is also very balanced for a ║ │ │║ metal singerÆs solo album. Johansson doesnÆt ║ │ │║ always sing for the most riff-oriented bands out ║ │ │║ there, so it is nice to hear an abundance of ║ │ │║ intricate guitar work alongside prominent ║ │ │║ keyboards and hard-working drums. Johansson ║ │ │║ himself also seems reined in; as someone who can ║ │ │║ find him too abrasive at times, itÆs good to see ║ │ │║ him turn in a more controlled performance with a ║ │ │║ less overwhelming place in the mix. ItÆs the one ║ │ │║ aspect of the album that seems to be taking cues ║ │ │║ from his time with Wuthering Heights. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Seeing how Nils Patrik JohanssonÆs name may be ║ │ │║ as recognizable as the bands heÆs fronted, it ║ │ │║ isnÆt too surprising to see him successfully ║ │ │║ maneuver a solo album. Evil Deluxe is right in ║ │ │║ line with everything else heÆs done but it ends ║ │ │║ up being better written and executed for ║ │ │║ whatever reason.
