│ Planet Seven - Pleasurecraft Recovery Theme │
├══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════┤
│ Planet Seven's debut LP opens like a sonic bomb blast û serious │
│ rump-kickin', nitrous-oxide injected, can of whoop-ass styled surf-like │
│ instro. Think of a hardcore version of the Friends of Dean Martinez with │
│ complex rhythms and heavy on the atmospherics, with an other-worldly, almost │
│ desert-like sound. At times the music is western flavored, at others you're │
│ hit with straight heavy metal riffs that equal big time good stuff. A very │
│ nice platter to enjoy enchiladas to on the patio at sunset. │
│ │
│ The disc opens with thunderous uber-twang with the nerve-shattering instro │
│ overdrive of "Crimewave," a hard-edged tune that has the makings of a real │
│ classic. Without skipping a beat, the boys roar right into overdrive with │
│ "Satan's Handbag," a twangy western throbber, brings to mind Gunfight at the │
│ O.K. Corral imagery û only with machine guns this time. "Blindsided" has │
│ that grungy Link Wray feel initially, but soon veers into a Spanish-like │
│ punk/surf hybrid. │
│ │
│ │
│ "Powerstrip" is another story altogether. It has a hard-edged ferocity with │
│ a Ventures' "War of the Satellites" on tequila feel. A very cool version of │
│ "Lara's Theme" (which originally appeared on the "Mondo Drive-In" comp) from │
│ the two-hanky classic Dr. Zhivago begins with pulsating space-race theremin │
│ warblings. It then kicks into high gear in a very pleasing sped-up version │
│ of the normally ultra-laid back theme -- a masterful reworking. │
│ "Pleasurecraft Recovery Theme" is a dreamlike tune from another planet. │
│ Soft, slow, reflective and just plain hypnotic. "Cerveza," a grinding, boozy │
│ Spanish-language tune, is the lone vocal. I normally hate vocals on instro │
│ platters, but this is really quite good. I find myself repeating this tune │
│ often. As far as I can comprehend, I think it's something to do with a guy │
│ losing his girl and drinkin' lots of cerveza (beer for those up North). │
│ "Double the Medication" could be the opening theme for a neo-spaghetti │
│ western (If someone would hurry up and revive the genre, already! -- I │
│ definitely think it's time, and Planet Seven should be hired to score it.) │
│ "Spectragraph" is a brilliant, ever-changing progression to complement your │
│ next bank heist. It is utterly cinematic, final and absolute proof that │
│ music does not need words to convey strong emotion. │
│ │
│ Without saying, all the other tunes on this extraordinary disc are │
│ remarkable. I went gorilla-nuts when I first heard this show stopping debut │
│ album. A good nuts, mind you, a crazy drunken orgiastic nudie bar kinda │
│ nuts. Believe me, I've listened to a lot of freakin' surf platters this year │
│ and most made me nuts in a really lame kinda way. And that, friend, can mean │
│ only one thing: hands down, this is one of the top five instro feasts of │
│ 1998, and a future cult classic of contemporary instro. Buy it already, │
│ you'll be glad ya did. │
