Slikback releases "Attrition" a densely
detailed, cinematic exploration of sound packed
with intricate rhythms and gleaming textures.
Slikbacks "Attrition" marks his first full-
length album for Planet Mu, delivering an
immersive melding of cinema and game sound
design with tough dance music. It's like a
sci-fi film for the ears, exploring a chain of
events with dark atmospheres and dramatic
pacing; trapdoors and jump scares for your
ears. These contrasts and the dense painterly
colour of his sounds give it a beastly beauty.
The album came to life during a period of
transition, while waiting for a visa after
recently moving to Poland from Kenya, where he
grew up. With this unexpected pause in travel,
Slikback found himself working at a slower,
more deliberate pace. Writing for a label
instead of self-releasing also introduced new
dynamics, like feedback and structured release
schedules. Rather than feeling restricted, he
saw this process as a blessing. In a happy and
reflective headspacenewly married and
welcoming a newborn childhe was able to fully
develop his compositions. I was finally able
to explore ideas to a point where I didnt feel
the need to change anything, he shares.
"Attrition" is the result of that creative
freedom.
While "Attrition" nods to familiar genres,
drawing on elements of Gqom, Dubstep, Tech-
Step, and Hardcore Techno, it pushes them into
new territory, shaping high-tech, intricate
compositions. I worked on the tracks back and
forth, drastically transforming some from their
original sketches, Slikback explains. I
wanted to create a journey within each track,
like something alien emerging from emptiness
beauty from chaos.
The album opens gently before diving into
fast-paced 140bpm sounds, reminiscent of
earlier Planet Mu releases. Midway through,
"Taped" shifts the energy with a shimmering,
160bpm rolling bassline. As the album
progresses, its intensity builds. The music
grows darker, faster, and more unpredictable,
culminating in a final track that bursts apart
in a thrilling, chaotic climax.
A standout moment in Slikbacks career,
"Attrition" is a masterclass in sound design
and vision. Strange yet beautiful, intense yet
rewardingits the most strikingly unique album
youll hear all year.
Boomkat Product Review:
Slikback's Planet Mu debut, 'Attrition' is the
Kenyan maverick's most focused and obsessively
tweaked set yet, a spread of knotty club
weaponry, jet engine noize and sci-fi
atmospherics that fully lives up to the promise
of those early game-changing Hakuna Kulala EPs.
Superior gear - RIYL 33EMYBW, Nazar, M.E.S.H.
or Klahrk.
We noticed that something had shifted when the
intricately engineered 'Data' relaunched Tempa
in January. For years, Slikback's material has
been broadly journalistic, a way for Freddy
Njau to scrub through ideas and move quickly
from release to release, accumulating material
while swerving the expected channels. And until
now, his tracks have mostly been released on
his own imprint; since debuting on Hakuna
Kulala in 2018, he's kept things almost
exclusively in-house, nurturing his dedicated
following via steady releases of boundary-
pushing, hastily assembled dancefloor
prognostications. So 'Data' felt a little
different, not only was it released on Tempa,
but the tracks were a little more finely worked
- and now we know exactly why. For the last
couple of years, Slikback has been holed up in
rural Poland and unable to tour while he waited
for his Visa, so he banked the free time and
slowed down to approach his process with more
intentionality. It was during this time that he
wrote 'Attrition', working closely with Planet
Mu and evolving his genre-fluxing compositions
with a clear, structured release schedule in
mind for the first time - no chance to just
drop 'em online for instant feedback and
Bandcamp bucks.
Honestly, the change in pace works for
Slikback. 'Attrition' is his most ordered, most
digestible record, and shockingly, its
coherence doesn't detract from the spark that
got us so excited about his material in the
first place. His wry sense of humor is there
from the offset, as he gives a nod to the
antecedents with 'Snow', a brief instrumental
that's like a dictaphone-dinked take on vintage
AFX/AE synthmelt, with far-off airhorns just to
remind us what's coming. So on 'Taped', we're
on rails, hit with a direct advancement of the
template Slikback's been subtly modifying since
'Lasakaneku'. All the classic elements are
present - cinematic sound design snippets,
chopped vocals, queasy bass, airlock
distortions - but everything's been re-ordered
somehow, ordered and engineered for maximum
devastation. In just a track, we can hear
fragments of dubstep, riddim, EDM, dancehall,
neurofunk and hardstyle melted down and
reprocessed to ooze into the Slikback mold -
all those years of R&D finally make sense.
Slikback's always sounded like he's making
music that's post-genre: trap, techno,
ballroom, gabber and whatever else he's been
listening to propelled into the future via jet
engine. And that's never more evident than on
'Knot', where his harsher elements (modem
interferences, screaming digital feedback) are
used to provide air to a pneumatic barrage of
gqom-cum-dungeon rap kicks and stinging synths.
Peep the ear-damaging 'ard dance scoop hits on
'Sekli' that Slikback reforms into sleazy trap
knocks, muddling the timeline with waterlogged
field recordings and videogame SFX, or the
Reese bass hums that the producer uses to
anchor polyrhythmic doom trance arpeggios on
the melancholy 'Duality'. Even when he's
veering into density and intensity, Slikback's
able to hold our focus, tempering his prophetic
dancefloor visions with references that show
the spectrum of his knowledge. His approach for
'Attrition' was to "create a journey within
each track", and he does that without resorting
to the hyperactive stop-start silliness that
derails so much of what passes for IDM. Case in
point - 'Trars', a track that seamlessly
reinvents itself several times, as quivering
noise, acidic basement techno, ritual ambient
and demonic, overdriven trap. Experimental club
albums are rarely quite so skillfully refined,
or this enjoyable.
