Every once in awhile in the hazy quagmire of bands with releases that fall a little bit short of exceptional, one will come along and take your breath away. 'Ease', the debut EP by Belgian shoegazers Slow Crush, did just that. Before Slow Crush's debut album 'Aurora' and the relentless touring schedule that ensued (including a US tour, festival appearances and a headline UK tour), 'Ease' served as an introduction for their blend of ethereal and infectious dream pop-meets-shoegaze. Songs such as 'Sway' and 'Linger' masterfully nod to greats such as My Bloody Valentine and Ride, whilst bringing a refined and contemporary alternative rock sensibility to their sound. This deft approach at blending the cacophonous with the otherworldly set Slow Crush apart from their contemporaries as more than just students of the shoegaze revival, with this reissue hammering home that fact. Accompanying the EP is four fan favourites taken from 'Aurora' and an alternative version of 'Sway', recorded at ABC studios courtesy of 'Part Time Punks Sessions' during the bands US tour. Within two years of the band's formation, this collection of early material will no doubt go down as a vibrant document of an exceptional band in their infancy. * Last year, Belgium's Slow Crush positively exploded into the scene with their glistening debut record, Aurora. In the light of such massive success, they've reissued their 2017 EP, Ease. Two years might not feel like a long enough time to warrant a reissue, but looking at the whirlwind of acclaim and nonstop touring they've had in the two years since debuting, Ease deserves a second look. It may be cliche to say that the group arrived fully formed, it couldn't be more true here. Ease has all of the same glassy ambience, crushing walls of noise, and dreamlike haziness of the full length that followed. If the similarity between the two weren't enough from listening to the original four tracks, the reissue also includes four alternate versions, including three tracks from the Aurora tracklist. Whether you're revisiting Ease or discovering it for the first time after falling in love with Aurora, this reissue is definitely worth your time. * About: Heavy like a gloomy dream yet soothingly vibrant. A compelling abrasive shoegaze band, dealing with the aesthetics of contrasting sounds. The vulnerable soft floating voice of Manchester's Isa Holliday underneath layers of grungy shoegaze soaked noisepop, seeking shelter from a f'ed up world. They debuted live March 2017, released 'ease' their debut e.p. in May 2017 through Flood, White Russian and Dingleberry records. Played Roadburn festival 2017 in The Netherlands, Eurosonic 2018 (Europes biggest showcase festival), Fluff fest in Czech Republic, toured Germany, Belgium, France, Holland, UK, Hungary. Played shows with bands like Brutus, Oathbreaker, Sleepmakeswaves, Turnover, Nothing and many more. Received airplay on the BBC Radio one Rock show,... all of this in their first six months of being an active band. The band recorded their debut LP 'Aurora' towards the end of 2017 at The Ranch Production house in Southampton with Neil D. Kennedy who produced bands like Milk Teeth, Creeper, Boston Manor,α The album was mastered at the Atomic Garden by Jack Shirley known for his work with Deafheaven, Oathbreaker, The Smith Street Band,α At around the same time Slow Crush signed with the London based Holy Roar Records whom will release their much anticipated debut LP coming September 2018. Slow Crush are bridging boundaries with their own distinct sound between Shoegaze, Postrock, indierock, Heavypop, Nugaze, Postpunk, Grunge. *** Belgium-based shoegaze band Slow Crush play at both ends of the dynamic spectrum, switching between crushing walls of noise and ethereal dream pop from song to song. Led by vocalist and bassist Isa Holliday, a former sludge metal musician, the band are more than willing to lean on their heavier side, although overall the project is comparatively lighter to Holliday's former group, Hearserider. The central idea of contrast is explored throughout their music, starting with the release of their debut album, Aurora, in 2018. Rounding out the group are Jan Jouck (guitar), Steven Cammaerts (drums), and Jelle Ronsmans (guitar), who, together with Holliday, wasted little time between their first live show in 2017 to heading into the studio to record their debut. In late 2017, the four-piece decamped to Southampton's Ranch studios to work with producer Neil D. Kennedy (Milk Teeth, Creeper, Boston Manor). Afterwards they moved to The Atomic Gardens, where Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Oathbreaker, The Smith Street Band) mastered the record. Their debut saw release the following year via three different labels, Flood Records, Dingleberry Records, and White Russian. The following year they reissued their debut EP, Ease, as it had fallen through the cracks somewhat. To flesh out the resissue they included some alternate takes of tracks from their debut. *** In recent years, the influence of shoegaze bands like My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive has slowly begun to seep into the sounds of a wide range of metal acts, lending a natural evolution to genres as diverse as doom and black metal. One only has to look at the success of bands such as Deafheaven and M░l to see how the shoegaze sound is being not-so-subtly woven into much heavier genres. However, it is Belgium quartet Slow Crush who arguably wear that influence most proudly on their sleeve. Formed in 2017, the band had only a home-recorded EP to their name when Holy Roar Records snapped them up, putting out their debut album Aurora in 2018. Made up of drummer Steve Commaerts, guitarists Jelle Ronsmans and Jan Jouck and Cheshire-born/Belgium-raised singer and bassist Isa Holliday, Slow Crush have quickly become one of Holy Roar's most talked about signings and it's not hard to understand why. From the shimmering, fuzzy guitars drenched in reverb to the driving drums and blissfully subtle vocals, the band have a sound all of their own that is working its way into the hearts of metal fans everywhere. -=- SHGZ -=- P.S. ** Thanks *** *** BCC FNT IPC SSR *** *** For Knowing Where The Music Is At *** *** Props to CaHeSo, awesome Asian Indie/Shoegaze *** *** And to FANG/HOUND for supporting all the Indie lovers out there *** --===-- ********************* * NuHS we miss you! * *********************
