Passage 4:44 47:56 The French black metal scene has always been interesting to me. With outfits such as Peste Noire, Vlad Tepes, and Mⁿtiilation, what isn't there to like? Staar take a raw black metal approach to the genre and are top class at doing so. The album itself is split into two parts. The first part, World War, consists of 5 tracks, whilst the second part, RΘsistance, consists of 4. World War kicks off with a very mysterious, yet very typical raw black metal intro entitled Sour Mash. The sort of sounds you would expect to hear are as such in a horror movie where the protagonist is in a very creepy place and you know something is about to happen. I guess this description could also relate to the album itself; you know something scary is about to happen. Immediately a voice that sounds like he is having his intestines ripped out of him sounds. This, of course, is Thomas (the vocalist,) and again I must point out that it is a very typical approach for raw black metal bands. This song, A Star In The Promised Land, is full of tremolo and ear-ripping vocals. The guitar itself seems very simple, but fits the song perfectly. Following A Star In The Promised Land is a song called Hunting. It begins with some typical black metal guitar, then there is a somewhat echoed voice in the background. This gives the song that little bit of atmosphere it needs. Then, alas, the ear-ripping vocals return. Throughout the song there are echoes which are done perfectly to make it sound like an army of people performing some sort of war cry. Track four is an interlude that sounds like a person's dying breaths and cries of despair mashed into one song. There isn't much to say about this other than it sounding very weird. Following this is a riff that sounds very reminiscent of Pursuit of the Vikings by Amon Amarth. This time, however, there is a sort of chant being done over the top. For me, this song has the most melody of the World War section. The drumming seems a little more amplified in this song as well and with its simple beats, it sounds great! This song also marks the end of the World War section of the album. RΘsistance kicks off with Petite France. This song starts off with a very Burzum-sounding intro with the guitar very distorted and the notes dragged and dreary. The screams make this song even better. This song is death for me! This track is an instrumental, which is perfect because any vocals on a track like this (other than the screams) would ruin it, so Kudos for that! TΘnΦbres, Nous Voilα starts out with a somewhat muffled guitar sound and no distortion, which is unlike raw black metal. Then the vocals come at you like a kick in the face, which is what I like in raw black metal, vocals in your face vocals that send chills down your spine! The vocals in this also seem very muffled and clean in comparison to the previous ones. Towards the middle is a perfectly done double bass pedal part. Presumably, this is done with a machine, but you would be forgiven for thinking otherwise due to its perfect sound. Ode aux Crasseux is the longest track on the song at 9:06 and starts out with a windblown intro. This soon goes into a soft, yet epic sounding guitar piece that reminds me slightly of Bathory for some reason. The vocals on this particular track are quite unique in comparison to the rest of the album. They are muffled, yet sound ripping. They have the perfect balance. I want to give an honourable mention to Julien for his guitar skills portrayed in this track specifically. Not once in this song did I think it sounded a little bit wrong. Lastly, Passage. If I were to describe this song in one word it would be 'mysterious'. The intro is a very strange sounding noise as expected, again, in a film. Then there is some guitar that's soft, but very calming and nice. Strangely, when Thomas does his half ripping vocals over the top of this calming piece, it doesn't annoy me or put me off. This particular part is near to perfection. This song is in no way heavy, but it is very mysterious. So to conclude, I would have to say this album is a very good dΘbut. They have stayed true to the raw black metal scene of France whilst also sounding somewhat unique.
