A celebratory, spiritual intersection of Afro-Latin and spiritual jazz, 21st electronic grooves, atmospheres, a choir, and souled out charts, resonated across the South Pacific; the album was greeted with praise across the global jazz community. Orbits, their followup, draws on the experience of touring over two years, expanding their confidence and creativity. Further, their primary influences here Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Sun Ra and Yusef Lateef inspire the band to explore the subtleties in their own dynamic sound. Opener "Constellation" delivers an Afro-Cuban conga groove atop a vibraphone, trap kit, and airy synth, before horns and piano roll in and introduce the choir. They engage the horns in call-and-response, before Joe Kaptein takes a riveting piano solo. The synths weave in and out of that solo, to send the entire track soaring. Single "Mizu" offers a seamless meld of Afro-Latin and Brazilian samba-jazz with a sub-tropical groove. There are classy nods at Tom Jobim, and Donald Byrd with the Mizell Brothers, lifted by gently insistent percussive waves, sparkling keys, and the joyful Love Affinity Choir. "Seki," another single, follows the tracks "Bones" and "Kohan," from Spirits. Its rippling hand percussion and drums meet horns and choir next to Kaptein's glorious piano solo engaging the rich orchestration, and adding tension, relief and resolution. "Amina" offers a sultry Latin groove that meets samba under rocksteady drumming and bumping hand drums. A steamy Fender Rhodes paints the backdrop as Jong-Yun Lee delivers a lyrical tenor solo. Semisi Ma'ia'i adds her voice to Kenny Sterling's (aka Matt Hunt) in a meditative, softly articulated mantra. The album's focus cut is "Flying" on which drummer / percussionist / producer Julien Dyne and Sterling enact a scorching Afro-Brazilian rhythm battle while paying tribute ot the great Brazilian jazz drummers: Dom Um Romao, Ivan "Mamao" Conti, Tutti Moreno, and Edison Machado. The tune's lyric vamp is the outgrowth of a polyrhythmic pattern, it unfolds in three parts. Finn Scholes delivers a kinetic vibraphone solo around Kaptein's snakey Fender Rhodes, bridging tight polyrhythms and solos, braiding Brazilian jazz and Latin dance grooves. "Teeth" is introduced by Ben Turua's funky upright bass meets marimba, vibes congas, bongos, timbales, and a drum kit. They wind around sparkling Rhodes piano; horns deliver a circular vamp illuminating Scholes' trumpet break as the choir punctuates the chorus, ands synths color the foreground atop a backmasked organ solo. Closer "Evening" is almost languid. Rhodes piano, congas, and timbales bubble under the bassline, adorned by modal piano and the choir. Horns engage Eastern-tinged, Afro-Latin modalism in a mantra-like vamp to carry it home. Orbits showcases the band's added experience and ambition with confidence and enthusiasm. This music is harmonically rich, atmospherically spacious, and rhythmically driven. It stacks up nicely with Kamasi Washington's blissed out cosmic opuses. That said, this sounds like a new, 21st century Pacific jazz. Thom Jurek /TiVo █▓ ▄▓ █▓ ..
