RIYL Radiohead, ANOHNI, Oliver Coates or Duvall Timothy. There are still shadows left of Njoku's early material, like his tape-fluttered avant-pop debut album 'In Greyscale', the noisy, AFX- inspired 'YOUR PSYCHE'S RAINBOW PANORAMA', or the nauseous, trap-adjacent 'KILLTONY EP', but there's an unmistakable shift in his sound that occurred sometime during the pandemic. Confronted with himself and his feelings, he scored a dilapidated upright piano that he set about restoring. It was this instrument that informed his reflective, compositionally dense 'Bloom' series of EPs, and he was only getting started. Experimenting with prepared piano techniques and challenging himself to arrange lavish, heart piercing string sections, Njoku was testing the waters with music that would eventually come to life in three dimensions on 'ALL OUR KNIVES ARE ALWAYS SHARP', a record that arranges not just Njoku's lofty ideas and ambitions, but a cast of Black British avant- garde voices from the past, present and future. Dub poet James Massiah (aka DJ Escrow), who's worked with everyone from Massive Attack to Dean Blunt, adds charm to 'CATATONIA', firing rain-soaked couplets between Njoku's pitch- wonked croons and swelling woodwinds. Veteran multi-disciplinary artist Ghostpoet brings his throaty annunciations to the baroque final act of 'THE SLIPSTREAM', a track that whirls through Volker Bertelmann-style prepared piano and 'Amnesiac'-inspired widescreen falsetto prog before settling into a fascinating analog dub groove. In-between paying his respects to his influences - even Tricky makes a surprising appearance on 'Depleted', shambling like we've not heard since the 'Pre-Millennium Tension' days - Njokou sharpens his own vision, layering dusty breaks and minimalist string phrases on 'SPIRALS' and engineering a Johann Johannsson- like vocoder-led epic with the lilting 'ETERNITY'. But he sounds most stimulated when he's breaking bread with fellow musical renegades. On the title track, Coby Sey's clear, familiar voice cuts through the operatic atmosphere and anchors the tension, and Space Afrika help fray the edges of 'ON THE BACK OF FORGIVENESS', a track that upsets stuttering beats with oozing analog drones and deliciously soulful strings. █▓ ▄▓ █▓ ..
