His work on æPrometheusÆ was one of that albumÆs ║ │ │║ highlights and it was one of my albums of 2015. I took the ║ │ │║ impressive looking digibook CD straight to the counter and ║ │ │║ purchased it. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ A fortuitous move, because I wasnÆt expecting the degree of ║ │ │║ excellence that Twilight Force demonstrate across this ║ │ │║ entire album of cinematic anthems to adventure and wonder. ║ │ │║ What I discovered were lush epic songs of dragons, swords ║ │ │║ and sorcery, with a musicianship that simply floored me ║ │ │║ through not just the dexterity and skill of the performers, ║ │ │║ but also their ability to craft a winning melody. Echoes of ║ │ │║ the best parts of Rhapsody of Fire are mixed with the less ║ │ │║ irritating moments of Dragonforce before merging into a ║ │ │║ cinematic accessibility that is both optimistic and ║ │ │║ triumphant. You will feel great after listening to this ║ │ │║ album. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ The production is full and powerful yet also clear and ║ │ │║ precise, so that every orchestral sweep and solo comes ║ │ │║ through with a stunning precision that is never thin or ║ │ │║ plastic sounding. Produced and mixed superbly by band ║ │ │║ members Blackwald and Lynd, it is clear that the album is a ║ │ │║ labour of love, with its near symphonic approach to sound. ║ │ │║ The sheer scale of this release means that there is always ║ │ │║ something new to discover through repeated spins. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ The album launches with a barnstorming power metal anthem ║ │ │║ in the title track, with its huge chorus where Conti ║ │ │║ immediately plants his flag in the ground. ItÆs an ║ │ │║ air-punching classic that sets the atmosphere perfectly ║ │ │║ through its energetic pace and supercharged yet tasteful ║ │ │║ guitar solos. There are simply beautiful solos across the ║ │ │║ whole album, and I wonÆt go into each one here, but theyÆre ║ │ │║ worth the price of purchase by themselves. The second ║ │ │║ track, æThunderswordÆ, is the albumÆs highlight and one of ║ │ │║ the greatest power metal songs that IÆve ever heard. The ║ │ │║ melodies are infectious and the chorus is a joy to hear. ║ │ │║ The end of the song with its reduction in speed and epic ║ │ │║ crescendo has to be heard to be believed. ItÆs one of the ║ │ │║ greatest endings to a metal song from any genre, and it ║ │ │║ leaves the listener with chills. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ There are great moments across the whole album, from the ║ │ │║ cinematic keyboard introduction of æWinds of WisdomÆ to the ║ │ │║ awe-inspiring end of the 12 minute album closer æBlade of ║ │ │║ Immortal SteelÆ. Blades of immortal steel are the best kind ║ │ │║ of blades. æWith the Light of a Thousand SunsÆ contains an ║ │ │║ Arabian Nights themed section that evokes the sights and ║ │ │║ smells of desert lands and strange bazaars. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ While itÆs close to the perfect power metal album, itÆs not ║ │ │║ quite. Tracks like æLong Live the KingÆ, æHydraÆ and 'Night ║ │ │║ of the Winterlight' donÆt quite live up to the classics on ║ │ │║ the album, although theyÆre still enjoyable. It seems ║ │ │║ almost churlish to point this out considering what a ║ │ │║ masterpiece the whole album ultimately is. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ IÆve touched on the performances, but more needs to be ║ │ │║ elucidated. Twilight Force are an incredibly capable cabal ║ │ │║ of Italians. LyndÆs lead guitar work is enough to throw any ║ │ │║ potential shredder into despair, while BlackwaldÆs ║ │ │║ orchestrations and keyboard work create fantastical visions ║ │ │║ and emotions, really bringing the Twilight Kingdoms of the ║ │ │║ album's setting to life. ItÆs as if Luca Turilli and Alex ║ │ │║ Staropoli have been unseated from their thrones by these ║ │ │║ guys. Alessandro ContiÆs voice shines and soars and is a ║ │ │║ pleasure to listen to. He is the perfect fit here. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ The album artwork is simply beautiful. The mandatory dragon ║ │ │║ on the cover is regal and appropriate, and the booklet is ║ │ │║ nothing short of magical with its map, fantasy short story ║ │ │║ that includes the band members as characters (and that ║ │ │║ seems to be about the acquisition of Conti to the line-up), ║ │ │║ pictures and lyrics. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ While IÆm not always in the mood for power metal, this ║ │ │║ album has close to a monopoly on airtime when I do need a ║ │ │║ dose of fantasy and adventure. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ There was certainly some magical force leading me to make ║ │ │║ this impulse purchase in that music store, and now I know ║ │ │║ what it was: the power of the dragonstar.
