││█▓░ RELEASE NOTES │
└─┬────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┬─┘
│ │
│ For years young mothers have rocked their babies to sleep while │
│ singing this enchanting "Lullaby" that Brahms (rhymes with bronze) │
│ wrote over a century ago. │
│ │
│ Brahms at Bedtime begins (and ends) with this tender song, played │
│ here on the cello. In between you'll be gently cradled by graceful, │
│ dreamy night pieces that set the mood for sleep and sweet dreams. │
│ Brahms music is full of beautiful lullabies and love songs. His │
│ greatest inspirations came to him as songs, weather they ended up in │
│ orchestral works (symphonies or concertos) or as chamber music for a │
│ small group of instrumentalists (sonatas, trios, quartets and │
│ quintets). │
│ │
│ The songs heard here reveal the secret springs of his emotional │
│ life. They have a peaceful depth and intensity of feeling -- a │
│ yearning for love and tenerness -- that is found nowhere else in his │
│ music. │
│ │
│ The main theme from the slow movement of this Second Piano Concerto │
│ [track 2] - introduced by the cello - is baed on a sad love song - │
│ "Ever Gentler Grows My Slumber." The "Adagio" from the Violin │
│ Concerto [track 3] has the soloist spinning rapt, twilight dreams, │
│ while the "Adante" from the "Double" Concerto [track 4] is a gentle │
│ love duet between lovers so in synch with each other that they speak │
│ as one (portrayed here by the violin and cello). │
│ │
│ In the intimate moments of the slow movements from his chamber music │
│ Brahms reveals his warm heart, gentle soul and heartbreaking pain. │
│ The pain came from unconsummated love affirs with the beautiful │
│ singers: Agathe von Seibold, Elisabeth von Herzogenburg and Hermine │
│ Spies. But this greatest love was Clara Schumann, the │
│ pianist/composer wife of Robert Schumann, who introduced the young │
│ Brahms to Vienna. Brahns forged a life-long self-sacraficing │
│ friendship with Clara which he immortalized in his music. │
│ │
│ The Clarinet Quintent [track 5] - writen shortly before he died - │
│ has an autumnal beauty, a quiet resignation and, at the same time, │
│ joy in a life well lived. The slow movement heard here has some of │
│ the greatest music that Brahms ever wrote. There is something │
│ melancholy in the sound of the clarinet. Brahms enhances the │
│ intimacy by softening the sound of the strings with mutes (devices │
│ that make the instruments sound like they are whispering their │
│ innermost thoughts into your ear.) The effect is sheer magic...a │
│ love song you'll never forget. │
│ │
│ Brahms' late piano pieces reveal the innermost depths of his soul. │
│ His "Fantasies" and "Intermezzi" [tracks 10 & 11] are very intimate: │
│ by turns thoughtful, reflective, dreamy, resigned, and elegiac...the │
│ perfect soundtrack to bring on sleep. These qualities were also in │
│ Brahms' earlier music, as you'll hear in th ever popular "Waltz" │
│ [track 13] and the song-like variation from his "Variations and │
│ Fugue on a Theme by Handel" [track 12]. │
│ │
│ Our sleepytime serenade ends as it began - with the beloved │
│ "Lullaby." So grab your pillow, pull up the covers, put out the │
│ lights and zzzzzzzzzzz..... │
