Ranglin's ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ contributions to that music are many: he has ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ served as producer, songwriter, and vocalist. ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Ranglin belongs to the "third wave" of Jamaican ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ producers who began working in the mid-'60s, when ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ recording facilities on the island were improving ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ and ska was giving way to rock steady. Joining ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Alvin Ranglin in that third wave were producers ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Edward O'Sullivan ("Bunny") Lee, Joel Gibson, ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Winston Riley, Lee "scratch" Perry, and Clancy ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Eccles, all of whom built on the work of the ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ second wave (Vincent Chin, Byron Lee, Leslie Kong, ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ and others) and on that of early '50s musical ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ pioneers such as Stanley Motta, Kenneth Khouri, ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ and Clement Seymour Dodd. Alvin Ranglin is a ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ particularly versatile member of that ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ distinguished company. ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ The following is excerpted from a series of ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ interviews Alvin Ranglin gave Aad van der Hoek in ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ August '89, August '91 and January '92 in ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Kingston, Jamaica. ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ "I was born on April 13, 1942, in May Pen, ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Clarendon, one of eight children. (I have three ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ brothers and four sisters.) My Mother, Urselee ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Simpson, and father, James Ranglin, sent me to ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ primary school in May Pen, after which I went to a ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ few different colleges to learn the electrician ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ trade. I also took a course at the National ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Trainee School of Technicians in London and an ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ American correspondence course in business. I ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ moved from May Pen to Kingston because I was going ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ to school there, and I intended to do more work in ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ recording studios. My sister Jessie, who had ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ started her own label, Gloria Records ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ [specializing in gospel music], wanted to team up ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ with me when I got interested in music. Later she ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ left the label in my hands when she went into the ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ clothing business. I renamed the label GG's. The ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ two G's were for the Gloria label and my [then] ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ girlfriend Hazel's middle name, also Gloria. ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Somehow it ended up that today most people call me ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ 'GG' [which, coincidentally is also used in ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Jamaica to refer to the governor general]. ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ I wasn't interested in producing music per se, but ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ as I wrote articles and songs it set me to ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ thinking. The first group I started singing with ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ was the Maytones around 1964, which included ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Gladstone Grant, Vernon Buckley, and me. I met ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ them both in May Pen after an audition (hence the ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ name Maytones!). We were quite successful at the ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ stage shows on which we appeared, but to make it ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ more beneficial, I left the group and became the ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ manager. After we built up a name as singing group ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ I decided we should do some recordings. But we ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ didn't get the chance from an established producer ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ to enter the recording studio. So that was another ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ reason I moved to Kingston - so I could learn more ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ about studio work, rather than going to different ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ producers and wasting my time. The first songs we ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ recorded at W.I.R.L., Jamaican Recording and ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Publishing Studio [better known as Studio One], ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ and Federal, were "Billy Goat", "Call YOu Up" and ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ "Loving Reggae". I returned as a singer in 1971 ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ when I linked up with Alphonso Flowers to form the ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ duo Flowers & Alvin. Some of the songs we did came ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ originally from Ms. Louise Bennett, and we scored ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ a few hits, such as "Howdy And Tenky". ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Things started really going well for me in 1968 ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ when I licensed music to Lee Goptal from Trojan ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Records, followed by the Palmer brothers' Pama ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Records. All my local productions from artists ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ like the Maytones, Winston Wright, Monty Morris, ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ the Slickers, Charlie Ace, Keeling Beckford, and ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Paulette & Gee, were released in England between ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ 1968 and '73 on labels like Blue Cat, Big Shot, ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Explosion, Grape Attack, Summit, Smash, Camel, ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Gas, Escort, Punch, Bullet, and exclusively on GG. ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ The financial rewards really helped a lot to build ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ up my business [enabling Alvin to run three record ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ shops, in Kingston, May Pen and Old Harbour] and ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ my stable of artists." ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Three decades and many hit productions later (by ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ artists including Gregory Isaacs, Leroy Smart, ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Barbara Jones, and I-Roy), Ranglin is still active ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ in the music business. He is a member of the ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Jamaican Music Board and manages his cutting and ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ pressing plant. Recently he built a new recording ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ studio at the old premises on Torrington Road in ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Kingston. (The original studio was badly damaged ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ by fire in the 1980s. Unfortunately, most of ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Ranglins's masters were destroyed.) Ranglin's ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ recent recordings with Dennis Brown, Jah Llyod, ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ Tyrone Taylor and others, are sure to conquer the ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ hearts of music lovers around the world. This ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ volume of "From GG's Reggae Hit Stable" displays ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ the broad spectrum of Ranglin's production skills, ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ his knack for choosing talented session players ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ and bringing out the best in his singers. His ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ productions, which have embraced the sounds of ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ mento and soul, soft reggae and roots reggae, have ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ timeless appeal. So now "let's all go rocking on ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ GG's reggae beat!" ░▓██▄ ░█▓▓░ - GROUP INFO - ░▓▓█░ ░█▓▓░ DON is a group of friends whos main goal is ░▓▓█░ ▀█▓▓░ to share Reggae, urban music to all their fans ░▓▓█▀ ▀██▓░ So if you like the music,go out and buy the cds ░▓██▀ ▀██▓░░ like we did !!! ░░▓██▀ ▀███▓░ ░▓███▀ █▓░█▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄███▄ ▀███▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄█░▓██ ▄██▓ ▓██▄ ▄██▓░ You think you got what it takes to help us? ░▓██▄ ▄██▓░ - Looking for Pre/Tues Rippers. ▓██ ▄██▓░ - Supplying 100mbit+ Sites.
