█████▓ RELEASE NOTES █████▓
Breathing new life into the mix album concept was never going to be
an easy task but that's exactly what Keep Diggin' recordings have
done with FX.Mix.01. Whil ethe rest of electronic music argues
about the rights and wrongs of live turntable versus computer-based
mixing, FX.Mix.01 goes one better with an album that uses the
latest software but based around a live DJing experience.
Kirk Degiorgio is the DJ in question, the software he used is
Ableton's Live 2 and his mix is based around a recent tour of
japan. Together they make a sublime combination that takes the mix
album to a whole new level.
Surely the art of mixing is to make the total greater than the sums
of the parts and that's exactly what Kirk has achieved on
FX.Mix.01. The source material has to be of the highest order of
course, and our man has come up trumps with artists and remixers
like Kyoto Jazz Massive, Phil Asher, John Beltran, Victor Davies
and 4Hero, and labels like Versatile, Ubiquity, Far Out, Mantis and
Compost. There's also a couple of exclusives from Kirk Himself
under his Family Values and Blue Binary monikers, as well as his
remix of 'Brightness in the Morning' by Clashing echoes which opens
up the album.
As befits a man with wide musical taste, Kirk delves deep into
latin house, broken beats and detroit techno territory along with a
smattering of nu-jaz, afrobeat, drum & bass and 2-step flavours.
Mellow strings and delicate, soulful vocals sit alongside more
melancholy moments and deep brooding basslines. On top of this he's
added his own percussion loops and infused everything with the warm
glow of the dancefloor.
Surprisingly for a man with such an impressive catalogue of work
behind him, this is Kirk's first proper mix album and he was
determined to choose records that worked at a club level. "I wanted
things that were dancey and not just musical" he explains. "things
that work on the dancefloor or in the car or at a party. I like to
bring in music from different genres to keep things interesting".
What makes FX.mix.01 really special however, is the way it's all
put together. It's not simply about beat-mixing the individual
tracks: instead Kirk weaves them into a sinuous whole where you
litteraly can't tell when one track ends and another begins.
Sometimes tow, wometimes three tracks are playing simultaneously
with his own loops sliding over the top.
Using the Ableton software, Kirk has been able to remix, re-edit,
loop, cut and paste to perfection. So, what makes it such a useful
box of tricks ? "Ableton Live is basically a music arranging
software tool" he says. "You can work in the arrangement screen
which is more like a traditionnal sequencer or in a live screen
where you can take as many tracks as you wnat and drop them in from
your hard drive. You can have them all playing at the same time and
it's synched to a global tempo."
Ableton is more than just a clever bit of studio technology,
however, as Kirk found when he tried and tested it on a recent tour
of japan with Ubiquity Recordings. He used Ableton Live on a basic
Apple Max laptop live on stage and certainly put it through its
pacesn although he took a bag of records just in case. Fortunately,
he never needed them once over the whole two-week tour.
"For me it's a more creative tool than using vinyl." says Kirk. "at
some points during the japanese tour I was mixing three tracks
together, plus loops on top, and introducing delays and filters.
The audiences were hearing well-known tracks in a totally new way.
"Cueing is 75% of DJing with vinyl, so using Ableton you have a lot
more time to do other things and be creative because you're not
constrained by the cueing process. You can go overboard, of course,
by using loads of plug-ins but the way i prefer to work is to
re-arrange other people's tracks and then bring in acappellas and
my own drum loops".
Not long after, Kirk returned to the studio and set about
recreating his mix for Keep Diggin' based on these experiences. On
the end result there is hardly any point in the mix where there's
only one record playing - quite possibly a first for a mix album.
Quite simply, you'll hear tracks like you've never heard them
before on FX.Mix.01. This is a mix album in the true sense and it
demands to be listened as a whole. In short, FX.Mix.01 is a unique
musical experience, never to be replicated and often to be
appreciated. As we said, the total is greater than the sum of the
parts.
Matthew Duffield, may 2003.

PS: u might wonder why i didn't put artist name and track info in
the .cue file. First of all, as explained above, this is not an
ordinary mix. Almost all the time, at least two tracks are
played at the same time.
In addition to that, the cover doesn't show any ordinary
tracklisting like 01. blah blah, 02. blah blah etc... it only
shows the different tracks used in the mix but in no particular
order and also the CD has 15 tracks while the mix only contains
14 titles.
All the track names are provided with this releases anyhow (above,
but in a random order), and i'm sure you'll recognize the amazing
tracks our man Kirk chose for the mix while listening.
It's a great mix ! Enjoy !
PS2: sorry for the fuck'd up nfo (no release notes and wrong rls#) in
