Musically, Mother & Child is an encouraging balm of sound because the ten singers (nearly all are young mothers) present a composite of styles -- folk, gospel, contemporary, classical (the collection also includes Martina McBride's rendition of the classic O Holy Night and Beth Nielsen Chapman's softly done Ave Maria), yet the arrangements and instrumental accompaniment blend well. Tempo may be the secret ingredient here. There's certainly no loud rock beat, but it's no lullaby either. Producer Tena Clark (mother of four!) has given her sure touch to make the inspirational blend for this sit-by-the-fire-and-hug-your-child kind of music.
