R E L E A S E ] ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Mbuti Pygmies of the Ituri Rain Forest ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Smithsonian Folkways CD SF 40401 (1992) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ These recordings, of the Mbuti tribe of pygmies ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ living in the Ituri rainforests of northern Zaire, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ were made by ethnomusicologist Colin Turnbull in ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the mid fifties and released on Folkways at that ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ time. They include a variety of ritual chants and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ songs practiced by the tribe, many centering on the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ hunt and the coming of age of men and women in the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ tribe. The music mostly consists of chants and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ songs augmented with flute, drums, and slit gongs. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The rhythmically and harmonically complex songs ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ form an important part of the lives of the Mbuti ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ tribespeople. This is fascinating listening, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ particularly because it represents a unique and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ endemic form of African music that (at the time of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ recording, at least) was unaltered by contact with ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Euramerica. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The music of the Mbuti is primarily focused around ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ vocal music and this recording beautifully captures ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the extraordinary variety and tonal quality of the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ solo and choral traditions. The songs are primarily ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ about the Mbuti's nomadic life and the forest, from ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ which their lives and those of the animal kingdom ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ are sustained. This compilation set a new standard ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ for quality ethnic field recordings for all labels ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ in ethnic music.
