But the DVD is an improvement over the original video, which was completely re-edited, adding wide angle shots of the stage rather than focusing almost exclusively on individual close-ups, complemented by the addition of newly remastered surround sound. The hard work by new label head Bruce Lundvall and producer Michael Cuscuna shows in the 14 selections from this very long evening, with many of the same musicians heard on the original recordings playing Don Sickler's transcriptions of their earlier work. But in addition to veterans like Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Herbie Hancock, Bobby Hutcherson, Lou Donaldson, and Jimmy Smith there are new faces such as flute player James Newton, soprano saxophonist Grover Washington Jr., and guitarist Stanley Jordan. There are also new compositions like Stanley Turrentine's easygoing blues "Scratch My Back" and Cecil Taylor's turbulent "Pontos Cantados." There are two obvious highlights: the hard bop classic "Moanin'," featuring seasoned veteran Art Blakey leading a sextet with Hubbard, Curtis Fuller, Johnny Griffin, Walter Davis Jr., and Reggie Workman; along with the equally exciting "Appointment in Ghana," with Jackie McLean joined by McCoy Tyner, Woody Shaw, Cecil McBee, and Jack DeJohnette. The voiceovers don't intrude over the live music, though in a couple of places the music gets underway while still photographs are present, but that is extreme nitpicking. Additional bonuses include galleries of Francis Wolff's historic session photos and Reid Miles' memorable album covers.
