It began in 1995 as the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ brainstorm of label head Shabs, whose company Media ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Village was busy promoting black music in the UK at ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the time. While attending the New Music Seminar in ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ New York City, the prevelance of black music being ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ produced, promoted and marketed by ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ African-Americans was the lead topic of discussion. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Shabs wondered what he - a British-Asian - could do ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ that was just as positive for and relevant to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Asians like himself living in the UK. After ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ carefully considering what to call a new label ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ supporting British-Asian music, the name Outcaste ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ emerged, and straight away seemed an appropriate ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and inspired choice. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The story continued when Shabs saw ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ multi-instrumentalist Nitin Sawhney playing tabla ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ on the Saturday morning television show 'Network ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ East.' It was instantly clear Nitin was a talented ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ artist whose material was as informed by the sounds ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ of London as it was by classical Indian music. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Sensing that this was an artist who embodied the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ cultural fusion which Outcaste was setting out to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ support, Shabs signed up Nitin, and the label had ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ its first artist. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Wanting to create a club environment that would ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ embody the spirit of the label, the famous Outcaste ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ club night - voted club of the year by The Face ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ magazine - was begun on June 13th, 1995 at Ormonds ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ nightclub on Jermyn Street in London. The first lot ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ of publicity set out to challenge people, featuring ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ taglines like 'Asians to Attack London' and 'Do You ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Fancy An Indian Tonight?' each followed by ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ "(Musically, That Is)." Flyers and posters to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ promote the night covered the length and breadth of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ London. Shabs took the records he had down to the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ club with no pre-meditated idea as to what he would ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ play. Proceeding to mix Indian classical raags with ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ old jazz breaks and new breakbeat tracks from the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ emergent leftfield scene, the musical blueprints ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ for Outcaste were drawn up. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Other contributors to the night included Talkin' ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Loud man Gilles Peterson, new Asian Underground ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ pioneers Earthtribe, Dj Ritu and Outcaste stalwart ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ DJ Badmarsh. Badmarsh would later merge his ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ club-savvy beats with the music of Bombay-born ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ bassist and tabla player Shri, in a collaboration ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ that would further the Outcaste sound to new ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ heights. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ From that night on, the club was a success, and has ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ remained so ever since, running side by side with ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the label. This was a momentous achievement and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ signified the rise and empowerment of young ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ diasporic Asian youth in Britain and indeed across ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the world. "I didn't know what that moment meant at ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the time, but looking back I can see how new and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ exciting it was, not just for those involved, but ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ also for those attending, " reflects Shabs. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ After a brief stint at The End nightclub it moved ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ to the newly established Notting Hill Arts Club. It ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ was here that Outcaste continued to build both a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ top club night and a cohesive musical community. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The 50th anniversary for Indian and Pakistani ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Independence at the Arts Club on August 14th,1998 ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ will be remembered for the queues, the heat, and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the energy, but more importantly, the sense of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ unity among the revelers. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The significance of the label is readily apparent ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ now, six artists and a compilation series later. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Recent achievements include Nitin Sawhney winning ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the South Bank Award for Album of the Year, as well ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ as being nominated for the Mercury Prize Album of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the Year.
