:: release notes.
::
:: Blowin' in the Wind
:: There was a time when the notion of the folk
:: singer-songwriter was all but a contradiction in terms.
:: Folk music was the sound of the people, not of the
:: individual. The coffeehouse beatniks and campus radicals
:: of the '50s folk revival venerated the elders of Delta
:: blues and Appalachian ballads--weathered, traditional
:: forms that defied the bland homogeneity of Eisenhower's
:: nuclear U.S.A.
::
:: "At that time, songwriting was still unfashionable," the
:: late Phil Ochs said of the folk revival period. "It was
:: still the euphoria of ethnic folk; folk being defined by
:: age, songwriting by pretense."
::
:: Folk's revival also stood in stark contrast to rock 'n'
:: roll--to the shameless exhibitionism of Elvis and of all
:: who emulated him. Whereas rock 'n' roll was flashy and
:: aspirational, folk was all about downward mobility,
:: solidarity with the downtrodden and outcast. It was the
:: original alternative rock.
::
:: And yet, inevitably, the PC purism of Pete Seeger and
:: friends grew its own commercial offshoot, primarily in
:: the form of clean-cut collegiate trios and quartets, who
:: layered wholesome harmonies over old mountain ballads.
:: None of these acts was more successful than the Kingston
:: Trio, whose jaunty version of the doomy Tom Dooley topped
:: the pop charts in 1958. Smartly, the Trio looked both
:: backward, to Pete Seeger's war lament Where Have All the
:: Flowers Gone, and forward, to the great rallying call of
:: the '60s that was Bob Dylan's Blowin' in the Wind.
::
:: Building on the mainstream success of Tom Dooley were
:: such artists as the Brothers Four (heard here on their
:: pleasant Greenfields) and the New Christy Minstrels (of
:: Green, Green fame), whose extensive lineup included
:: future Byrd Gene Clark. These acts, and others like them
:: (We Five, the Serendipity Singers, the Chad Mitchell
:: Trio, ex-Limeliter Glenn Yarbrough), often appeared on
:: television's Hootenanny show.
::
:: From England, meanwhile, the Springfields' Silver Threads
:: and Golden Needles (boasting the golden throat of young
:: Dusty) made the U.S. top 20 in 1962. Driven by drums,
:: strings and bluesy piano and punctuated by a jangly
:: guitar solo, Silver Threads was majestic folk pop--the
:: Mamas and the Papas four years before California
:: Dreamin'.
::
:: Folk's entry into the pop mainstream encouraged an
:: emerging generation of troubadours to try its hand at
:: writing its own material. None did so in more
:: trailblazing or resonant fashion than Robert Zimmerman,
:: a.k.a. Bob Dylan, a disciple of the original folk
:: singer-songwriter, Woody Guthrie. The giant shadow of
:: Dylan's skinny form hovers over many of the recordings
:: included here.
::
:: Dylan's fearless forging of folk and rock galvanized his
:: contemporaries. Erstwhile coffeehouse warblers like John
:: Phillips--a graduate of the smooth young
:: Journeymen--started writing bold anthems to the "new
:: golden land" of California (e.g. the Mamas and the Papas'
:: California Dreamin'). That state's own Byrds electrified
:: both Dylan (Mr. Tambourine Man, etc.) and Pete Seeger
:: (Turn, Turn, Turn). Folk-rock songbird Judy Collins
:: imprinted herself on Joni Mitchell's soul-searching Both
:: Sides Now, a sacred text of the neo-folk confessional
:: scene that bloomed in L.A.'s Laurel Canyon.
::
:: Folk rock and folk pop wind a steady course through all
:: the songs in this collection. From elder statesman
:: Seeger's version of the Cuban revolutionary song
:: Guantanamera to the wistful swansong that is Otis
:: Redding's (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay; from Gale
:: Garnett's breezy We'll Sing in the Sunshine to the Stone
:: Poneys' ardent reading of Mike Nesmith's Different Drum,
:: here is the sound of folk music with a clean pop sheen, a
:: sound track for the '60s dream, with the answers blowing
:: in the wind of change.
::
:: Here, too, is the folk ethos sprouting in hits by artists
:: from distinctly non-folk backgrounds: Dock of the Bay by
:: Redding, Baby Don't Go by Sonny and Cher, Abraham, Martin
:: and John by Dion. But as ingenuous and quaint as some of
:: the cuts are--Trini Lopez's Lemon Tree, Jimmie Rodgers's
:: Kisses Sweeter Than Wine, Harry Belafonte's Jamaica
:: Farewell--all the music heard here resonates as richly
:: today as it did then.
::
:: Peter, Paul and Mary transformed a traditional
:: African-American lullaby into one of their loveliest
:: recordings, All My Trials, which appeared on their 1963
:: LP In the Wind. This arrangement was shaped by the
:: group's musical director Milt Okum. Harpers Bizarre
:: turned Paul Simon's Manhattan-specific The 59th Street
:: Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy) into a Californian soft-rock
:: concerto. Grizzled country singer Johnny Cash showed his
:: willingness to consort with radical youth by tackling
:: Dylan's Don't Think Twice, It's Alright, while folk's
:: anointed princess, Joan Baez, revisited her former
:: paramour's back pages in 1969 with her rendition of Love
:: Minus Zero/No Limit, the original version of which
:: appears on Dylan's album Bringing It All Back Home.
::
:: A more pronounced example of folk going pop! is the
:: charming, chiming Do You Believe in Magic by sometime jug
:: band the Lovin' Spoonful. Singer-guitarist John Sebastian
:: had grown up in the Greenwich Village folk world of the
:: '50s and '60s, but -- like the Byrds and every other
:: American artist in the mid-'60s -- had not been able to
:: ignore the Beatles. "Do you believe in the magic in a
:: young girl's heart?" Sebastian sang, encapsulating the
:: young, free and groovy mood of the time.
