On october 1, 1993, we merged with the U's faculty station, ▌█ ▐█▐ █▐KUOM (AM-770, the oldest radio station in Minnesota), took over the ▌█ ▐█▐ █▐airwaves, and became Radio K. We quickly figured out how to use our ▌█ ▐█▐ █▐10,000-watt daytime signal to snare tens of thousands of listeners ▌█ ▐█▐ █▐across the Twin Cities and southern Minnesota, thanks to how big that ▌█ ▐█▐ █▐alternative thing was getting. Playing copious amounts of local music ▌█ ▐█▐ █▐was key: Minneapolis, after all, was (and is) bustling with more great ▌█ ▐█▐ █▐bands than anyone knows what to do with. ▌█ ▐█▐ █▐ ▌█ ▐█▐ █▐Then we figured out how to put live local bands on the air using Studio▌█ ▐█▐ █▐K - a large soundproofed room with an isolated, vintage Neve board, ▌█ ▐█▐ █▐well preserved since Radio K's Rarig Center home was built in the early▌█ ▐█▐ █▐'70s. The board (and Radio K's natural AM filtering) gives a lot of ▌█ ▐█▐ █▐music a nostalgic, classic pop radio feel that the musicians themselves▌█ ▐█▐ █▐grew up with. The Friday drive-time Off the Record program began ▌█ ▐█▐ █▐10/22/93 with a modest, stripped down performance by the Hang Ups; we ▌█ ▐█▐ █▐had no idea what we were doing. Within months, some volunteers had ▌█ ▐█▐ █▐taught themselves from scratch how to mix live sound. To date, over 100▌█ ▐█▐ █▐local bands and dozens of visitors have performed live on Radio K. ▌█ ▐█▐ █▐ ▌█ ▐█▐ █▐Stuck on AM: Off the Record in Minneapolis, an all-volunteer effort, is▌█ ▐█▐ █▐Radio K's collection of our favorite live recordings of local music in ▌█ ▐█▐ █▐the first two years. It's a cozy live sound that attempts to piece ▌█ ▐█▐ █▐together some of what's been going on around here lately. It's music we▌█ ▐█▐ █▐picked because we actually liked it and cared about it.
