T H i S . R E L E A S E ] ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ "As the Indian film phenomenon sweeps mainstream ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Britain the Rough Guide To Bollywood is the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ essential introduction to the colourful, vibrant ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and dramatic soundtracks of the multi-million ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ dollar industry that is bigger and more productive ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ than Hollywood. Compiled by DJ Ritu, broadcaster ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and club DJ for London club nights Kuch Kuch and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Club Kali and assisted by BBC Asian Network's ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Bhagwant Sagoo this is a collection of the biggest ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and best Bollywood has to offer. Includes tracks ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ from such Bollywood legends as Asha Bhosle, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey and Udit ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Narayan." ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ www.worldmusic.net ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ And another one in the great Rough Guide Series. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ This one focuses on Bollywood (India's Hollywood ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ located in Bombay) and does it, imho, very well (as ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ all Rough Guides do in fact). A nice introduction ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ to the music, the second half of the disc is the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ better one I think, but decide for yourself is my ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ advice ;-) My personal favourite here's track 14, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Lucky Ali with 'Ek Pal Ka Jeena', absolutely ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ fantastic imho! ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Couldn't find any review on the net, so here's the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ whole booklet information (what good would it be to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ listen to it, like some songs and not know anything ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ about it?). Between brackets are the names of the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ movies. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ High drama, glamour, glitz, curry westerns and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ tear-jerking storylines take centre stage on the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Rough Guide to Bollywood's film scores. From the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ early Bollywood top Indian vocalists, such as Lata ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Mangeshkar, her sister Asha Bhonslee, the dramatic ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Kishore Kumar and the seminal Mohammed Rafi, to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ some of the newcomers who have lent their vocals to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ more recent productions, such as Chitra, Lucky Ali ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and Alka Yagnik, this is a great introduction to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the vast scene known as Bollywood. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ There is much that can be said about Bollywood. The ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ multi-million-dollar industry spawned from the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ streets of India's west coast city Bombay, bigger ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and more productive in terms of output than ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Hollywood itself, churning out new movies almost ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ daily, creating actor stars who are worshipped as ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ gods, and generating styles and fashions across the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ subcontinent and beyond. The glitz, the glamour and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the glaring absence of money and television sets ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ across Asia for many years ensured that Bollywood ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ was the essential fodder for the masses, food for ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ escapism far away from the daily struggle for life. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ But all this has been said before... Here is a more ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ personal diasporic account. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ We've come a long way, baby, since the 1970s ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ England I grew up in, where my Asian life was a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ completely separate and secret world I kept from my ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ English friends. I went to school and did English ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ things: played netball, talked about Top Of The ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Pops, and ate beef cobbler and jam roly-poly. At ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ home, family life rotated around work, work and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ work, plus chapattis an family parties. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Occasionally we had 'special' outings - my parents ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ yearning for a little taste of 'back home' - when ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ we'd go to see an 'Indian' movie, mabybe once every ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ two months or so at some beat-up, grubby cinema ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ hall in Ilford, where suddenly I would see brown ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ faces - faces like mine (!) - on the big screen. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ This felt very different to watching Chitty Chitty ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Bang Bang and Oliver!, though the format of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ musicals was similar. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The impact was so strong on various levels that I ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ remembered each 'Indian' movie for months ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ afterwards. The music, singing, dancing, the story, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the gorgeous actors and actresses, and the fact ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ that this movie was made in the country I came from ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ but had never been to - my country of origin... ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ India! So you see I lived in two worlds: England, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and English India (informed largely by Bollywood ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ movies). My mother used to buy her saris in a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ little shop called Dhamini's in London's East End. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ At that time there were no Asian music stores, but ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ to my delight sometimes my mum would treat me to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ one of the Indian film records that Dhamini kept on ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ a lower shelf next to the bangles. In this way I ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ acquired the soundtracks to films like Aradhana, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Mera Naam Joker, Pakeezah, Sholay and other ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ classics. No matter that we didn't have a record ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ player. At least I now had a piece of my favourite ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ films, and English India at home! ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Something changed over the last thirty years and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ I'm not sure we even noticed it doing so... ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ And so here and now, in the present, the year is ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ 2002 and I take my original filmi vinyls into ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ nightclubs across the world and play them to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ audiences, both Indian and otherwise. My English ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ India is no longer a secret, butinstead an ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ experience I have learned proudly to share with ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ everybody. Both London nightclubs that I run (Kuch ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Kuch... and Club Kali) are thriving, with clubbers ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ of every nationality rocking to Bollywood beats. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Dhamini's is now a multinational fashion leader ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ with branches in Dubai and central London. There ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ are lots of Asian music shops, but you can also buy ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in high-street music stores... ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Curry (and presumably chapatti) is officially ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Britain's most popular food, outstripping even fish ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and chips. Just in the last three years, more and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ more Bombay-made films are entering the British ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ (mainstream) top Ten. Amir Khans's cricketing movie ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Lagaan is tipped for an Oscar. Last year Asoka ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ became the first Indian movie to premiere in ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ London's Leicester Square. And this year, Andrew ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Lloyd Webber - the man himself - will unleash his ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Bollywood Dreams production into London's West End. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ So, if the Rough Guide to Bollywood is your first ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ encounter with this genre, hear it well because, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ you see, we have come a long way, baby. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Following the success of The Rough Guide to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Bhangra, plans were hatched for the Rough Guide to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Bollywood back in 2000. Many delays, discussions ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and (in my case) house moves later and here it ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ finally is! Not quite the album I'd envisaged, as ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ being ad DJ and radio presenter my instinct was to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ put together a dance-floor-orientated collection. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ But instead, due to contractual complications, The ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Rough Guide To Bollywood has found shape more as a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ classic love-song CD, and is indeed a very fine ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ collection. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Dum Daro Dum (Hare Rma Hare Krishna) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ A kitsch classic featuring singer Asha Bhonsle ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ (Lata Mangeshkar's sister and R.D. Burman's wife) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ at her sleaziest. Where Kishore Kumar was typified ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ by his 'yodelling' singing style, Asha was the one ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ to bring into the studio for something really ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ quirky. Legendary film star Dev Anand wanted to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ create a film that showed off the drug culture of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the early 1970s and followed the hippy trail to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Katmandu, where an intoxicated Zeenat Aman mimes ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ this controversial song penned by R.D. Burman. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Roop Tera Mastana (Aradhana) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Producer/director Shakti Samanta used a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ revolutionary revolving one-shot pan for the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ picturisation of this most seductive Kishore Kumar ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ song, flinging film stars Rajesh Khanna and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Sharmila Tagore into arguably the sexiest scene in ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Bollywood history without even having to resort to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ a kiss. Music director S.D. Burman served up the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ composition for this beautiful movie very much in ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ vogue with the 'liberated' 1970s, and introduced ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ his soon-to-be-equally-famous composer son, Rahul ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Dev, into the creative process. If I feel like a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ good cry, I still always watch Aradhana! ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Piya Tu Ab To Aaja (Caravan) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Another 1970s R.D. Burman classic, sung by Asha ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Bhonsle and mouthed by India's naughty screen ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ seductress Helen. Cabaret numbers like this one, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and 'Dum Maro Dum', were a regular feature of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Indian films up to the 1980s, performed by vamps ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ like Bindu, Laxmi Chhaya and Padma Khanna, who ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ became celebrated stars in their own right before ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the onset of heroins adopting more risque garb ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ superseded them. As an example of how naughty Helen ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ was perceived to be (and indeed this whole genre of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ films), whereas I was taken by my parents to see ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Aradhan and Sholay as a little girl, I'd never even ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ heard of all the vampy movies. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil Mein Khayal Aata (Kabhi ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Kabhie) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ A classic film of the 'romance' genre and one that ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ allowed 1970s megastar Amitabh Bachan to shed his ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ 'angry young man' image in favour of playing a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ romantic poet. The song itself became the rage of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the nation thanks to the sensitive lyrics of Sahir ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Ludhianvi and the soft-as-gossamer music by ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Khaiyyaam. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Chura Liya Hai Tum Ne (Yaadon Ki Baaraat) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The song that launched a thousand cover versions, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and perhaps the most notable by contemporary ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ producer Bally sagoo. Composed by R.D. Burman, and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ featuring a classic Mohammed Rafi/Asha Bhonsle ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ duet, this is undoubtedly one of Bollwyood's best! ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Pyar Diwana Hota Hai (Kati Patang) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The 1970s proved to be a purple patch for three ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ people - singer Kishore Kumar, composer R.D. Burman ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and heartthrob actor Rajesh Khanna - who all came ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ together for this Shakti Samanta 'Mills and Boon' ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ tearjerker. This song is the typical 'party piece', ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ with the stylishly attired leading man wowing ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ partygoers with his ease of delivery and sheer ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ class. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Yeh Dosti Hum Nahin (G.P. Slippy's Sholay) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ R.D. Burman composed this ultimate 'buddy' song ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ featuring the first ever male duo vocal harmony in ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the history of Hindi film music. Sung by Manna Dey ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and Kishore Kumar for actors Dharmendra and Amitabh ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Bachan, the film, a 'Curry Western', became India's ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ most succesful movie ever, and we await the sequel ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - Sholay 2 - scheduled for release in 2002, some ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ thirty years after the making of the original. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Aap Jaise Koi (F.K. International's Qurbani) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ A kitsch classic - the Indian equivalent of Abba's ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Dancing Queen - and even when played on dancefloors ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ today the crowd goes 'Whoooh!' and then sings ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ along! Singer Nazia Hassan and her brother Zohab ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ leaped to fame in the 1970s as a sister/brother ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Hindi-pop outfit releasing other mega-hits like ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ 'Disco Deewane' Sadly, Nazia died of cancer in ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ 2000. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Jaadu Teri Tazar (Darr) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ A big 'hero' song sung by Udit Narayan and thus ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ becoming synonymous with the singing voice of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ India's current number-one 'hero' actor, Shah Rukh ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Khan. Pandit's Shiv Kumar Shamra and Hari Prasad ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Chaurasia - better known for their prowess in ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Indian classical music (santoor and flute ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ respectively) - cemented their earlier composition ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ success of the film Silsila with the musical score ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ for this unusual drama, where Shah Rukh plays a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ psychopathic murderer. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Tujhe Dekha To (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Doyen Lata Mangeshkar proves herself as the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ everlasting 'Queen of Melody' even after nearly ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ five decades of playback singing in this famed duet ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ with Kumar Sanu, vocalising for acting duet Kajol ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and Shah Rukh Khan. The Yash Chopra studio produced ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ this film of excellent standards, breaking away ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ from the predictable Bollywood story line of three ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ brothers separated at birth who find each other ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ later in life - one a criminal, one a police ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ officer, and one who's good-looking - and then do a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ lot of kung fu fighting against each other before ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ sussing out that they are actually siblings, so ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ they make up and cry a lot and settle down with a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ nice wife each. Anyway, as I was saying, the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ storyline for Dilwale... is not as above! ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Kehna Hi Kya (Aalayam's Jammu Sugand Presents ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Bombay) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Singer Chitra made her first foray into Bollyland ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ with this track, in spite of already being a huge ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ star in her native South India. Likewise for fellow ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ 'southie', composer A.R. Rahman, Bombay could be ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ regarded as his first major hit and, combined with ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ director Mani Ratnam's ground-breaking story and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ standards, Bombay was 'talk of the town' after ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ release. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Didi Tera Devar Deewana (Hum Aapke Hain Koun) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Rajshri Productions minted a fortune with this ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ spectacular feel-good-factor film wholly based ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ around the great Indian infatuation for weddings. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Anglicised and theatrefied at London's Lyric ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Hammersmith by Tamasha Theatre Company in the new ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ millennium, this film soundtrack remains a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ favourite today for its playful, humorous lyrics. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Easily the biggest and best film of 1998: slickly ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ produced, above-average production values, and a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Jalin Lalit film score to die for. Here we chose ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the title track of the album, but many of the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ others are more than worthy, and also display the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ growing partnership of playback singers Udit ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Narayan and Alka Yagnik as the perfect singing ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ voices for actors Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Ek Pal Ka Jeena (Kahoo Naa... Pyaar Hai) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ A blockbuster hit from 2000 that finally launched ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ singer Lucky Ali into Asian clubbing consciousness. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Don't know if it's the folky guitars or Lucky's ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ yearning vocals, but this was easily the most ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ requested track at the Kuch Kuch... club last year ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ by (interestingly enough) male customers only! ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ PHir Bhi Dil Hai HIndustani (Phir Bhi Dil Hai ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Hindustani) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Sony music entered the Bollywood soundtrack arena ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ for the first time with this CD release, teaming up ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ with actors-turned-co-producers, Shah Rukh Khan and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Juhi Chawla. A slickly made film with high ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ production standards, the music achieved instant ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ success partly through the might of Sony publicity, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and also with the catchy and patriotic title song ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ for those Indians living abroad, who could now ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ sing, 'Still my heart is Indian'! ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Enough typing for today I think... ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Covers are included. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ For the original albums (and catnrs) see the id3 v2 ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ tags. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ IN = Domain suffix for India ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Greetz to all those interested in world music and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ especially the ones in JUSTFUN ;-) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Cimarosa ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ░ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓ ▐█████▓█ [ A B O U T .
