R E L E A S E ] ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Ubiquity's first Viva Cubop compilation was a huge ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ hit in terms of modern Afro-Cuban jazz, and was a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ typically useful way to learn about many of the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ musicians on the Ubiquity label. Many artists, new ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and old had material included, including Pucho and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ his Latin Soul Brothers, Johnny Blas, Snowboy, and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the Har You Percussion Group. This time around, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Ubiquity has done the same thing for Viva Cubop 2: ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Dance the Afro-Cuban Way, finding a great way to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ showcase many of the artists on their label roster, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ both old and new. It's a good way to discover new ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ music, and chances are you'll be able to pick up a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ full-length by the musicians on this compilation. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Certain musicians on this compilation stand out, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ but while the style of Grupo X (who often back ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Bobby Matos on tour, are have only had a few songs ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ liscensed to Ubiquity) is a bit more of a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ traditional sounding sort of descargas than say the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ more lush, fusion style of Marlon Simon, it's ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ difficult to pick favorites due to the differences ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ in styles. Almost everything on here is good, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ without falling into stylistic complications, like ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ acid jazz, or "Afrocalia" (Afroshock is more ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ African than Cuban, but it is not out of place on ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ here), to detract from their straight-forward feel. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ My particular favorites include the fantastically ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ good descarga, "La La La" by Mr. Bongo, Jack ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Costanzo, a complex piece with calling, clapping, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ guitar solo, trumpet solo, rich vocals by Marilu, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and of course, the incredible skills of Costanzo ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ himself; Ray Armando's "Con Mi Guaguanco", a subtle ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ piece by a conga player who has played with ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ everyone from Mongo Santamaria to Stan Getz to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Sarah Vaughn to Antonio Carlos Jobim, and has never ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ had an album of his own, until recently; and the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Jazz on the Latin Side All-Stars' "Mujer Chicana", ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ who have so many good musicians in their ensemble, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ forget it, I'm not even going to begin to name them ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ all. If you want to know about Latin jazz, this is ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ a fine, upbeat way to get into it. Or if you want ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ to know about the roster of acts doing Latin jazz ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ on Ubiquity, same thing. It's a good way to find ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ out if you might be more into someone like ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Britain's conguero Snowboy, or vibe player Dave ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Pike, or the Italian-born Afroshock. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ░ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓ ▐█████▓█ [ A B O U T .
