Not only that │ │but, each track is remixed by a different member of the WordSound posse. Here │ │at last is a chance to experience the collective power of the WordSound │ │guerilla army at its finest. Mix alchemists include Bill Laswell, Prince Paul,│ │Spectre, Professor Shehab, Dr. Israel, Megabyte, The Eye, The Count of Monte │ │Cristo, Doug Scharin, Ish Allen, Scotty Hard, Captain Kowatchi, Eraldo │ │Bernocchi, Kevin Martin, and O.H.M. Over two hours of quality music from the │ │stars of Subterrania. Dub, hip-hop, trip-hop, drum'n'bass, electronica, Latin,│ │Middle Eastern, ambient, noize, other-world--you name it, we got it │ │ │ │------------------------------------------------------------------------------│ │ │ │Once again, WordSound delivers. The little Brooklyn based label has grown to │ │be a mighty force in the ambient dub/abstract hip-hop circles, and releases │ │like this show good reasons. Using the whole 23 mythos thing, WS chose to │ │celebrate their 23rd release by compiling tracks from the first 22, and one │ │from the now released Spectre disc The Second Coming. Rather than just │ │rehashing the songs, most are remixed by others on the WS roster, along with a│ │few direct off of the discs, and a few unreleased. │ │ │ │Being placed in order, the first track, "Chicken Walk '97", credited to │ │WordSound (from the album The Red Shift) is a rather cheesy, yet intensely │ │funky, track of corny vocals, funky bass and beats, and what sounds like an │ │accordion. "Scarab Medley", originally by Scarab, is remixed by Scotty │ │Hard/Scott Harding, and it comes out a phat dub track of great beats and │ │middle eastern wind and stringed instruments. Dr. Israel's self mixed │ │"Saidisyabruklinmon Nobwoycantess" is about as understandable lyrically as its│ │title, but the actual track is an unbelievably dope song of rapid jungle │ │beats, thumping beats, reggae vocals by Israel, and backing loops of "Go │ │Brooklyn!" Hard to describe, but easy to love...one of my favorites among both│ │discs. Dr. Israel's mix of "Freedom Street" (from The Seshambeh Project) is a │ │dubby track of manic drums, echoed/reverbed vocals, sax, and great basslines. │ │"King Cobra in the Temple of Smoke", originally from Spectre's Illness disc │ │(then titled "Spectre Meets The Psycho Priest in the Temple of Smoke", remixed│ │by Free Time (with King Cobra) becomes an almost straight forward hip-hop │ │track, although with a decidedly sinister bent. Other standouts on the first │ │disc include Israel's "Psalm 87", remixed by Captain Kowatchi...dubby reggae │ │mixed with Bible stories is actually a cool thing. Also, SIMM's Eraldo │ │Bernocchi gets downright funky on mixing Prince Paul's "J.O.B.", turning a │ │somewhat unmemorable album track into a dope remix. │ │ │ │The second disc begins with Spectre and Scotty Hard's collaborative track "The│ │Joust", remixed by Corporal Blossom, sounding as dark and slow as one would │ │expect. Another Spectre track, "Hidden Gods" is here, remixed by DJ Vadim, │ │which also lives up to expectations, being mostly Vadim's clear, dope beats, │ │and dark instrumentation via the Ill Saint. "Drunken Monkey", by Ebn E Sync, │ │also features some Middle Eastern instrumentation and vocals, meshed with some│ │crazy jungle beats worthy of DHR. "Eliminate the Countdown", a reworking of │ │Bug's "Countdown to Elimination" by Ish, starts out really corny, but the │ │addition of strings and piano adds extra tension to the bass and drum rhythms.│ │Bill Laswell's mix of Scarab's "Fall of the Towers of Convention" (retitled │ │"Towers open Fire") initially starts out bland with some annoying female vocal│ │samples, but the addition of some strong drums and Laswell's traditional colon│ │rumbling bass perks it up well. Kevin Martin remixes Sensational's "Skit n' │ │Scattern'" to an even more noisy level, and also improving the track with the │ │mix. Spectre's "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold" is the final track, and a │ │good choice at that. │ │ │ │Basically, we have the aforementioned superb tracks, and the rest are good, │ │but just not as outstanding.
