Just like the feel of the :: :: lyrics brings me back to the 80's, so does the music. There :: :: is a pretty clear line back to the birth of extreme metal :: :: and a time where the different genres weren't too much :: :: defined. So expect things to go fast and the raspy high- :: :: pitched growls to be sung really fast as well. Yet, the :: :: band goes to groove territory and almost scream-a-longs in :: :: almost every song. "Metamorphosis" is a great example - I :: :: am having a hard time to keep up with the verses, but the :: :: chorus will get people screaming along in no time! :: :: :: :: If you are a fan of vocalist going "ugh!" and "ah!" every :: :: now and then, this album is also for you. I think I counted :: :: about 25 parts on the record, where vocalist Hand of Doom :: :: (yes, every member has a synonymous name which is another :: :: 80's reference), bursts into a short raspy yell. The :: :: amazing "Ghoul Wind" is probably the best example of this. :: :: :: :: There are lots of solos on the album, and none of them are :: :: too long! Most songs are short and has an almost punky :: :: energy, and Vampire are in a hurry to get them over with an :: :: begin the next metal onslaught, but nothing on the album :: :: feels rushed or without effort and intensity. Everything on :: :: the album seems in place! The production is a bit loose :: :: (intended) yet everything sounds pretty clean and well- :: :: produced. :: :: :: :: Finally, there is one last thing I have to comment on. The :: :: cover art and booklet - oh my god, it is absolutely :: :: gorgeous!! Every song has its own haunting and beautiful :: :: drawing. They tie in to the story of the songs and just :: :: adds such a great dimension to the already fantastical and :: :: mysterious album. "Metamorphosis" and album closer "Scylla" :: :: has the most amazing drawings in my opinion. And speaking :: :: of the closing song of the album, "Scylla" ends with this :: :: amazing lo-fi choir singing in what I believe is Russian or :: :: Eastern European. It sounds like it is from an old movie. :: :: Perfect ending! :: :: :: :: Overall, if you are a fan of the old extreme metal scene, :: :: Vampire will take you right back to that golden age. But :: :: they sound fresh, determined and stand out on their own! :: :: The album is a tremendous pleasure to listen to and no song :: :: is a filler or seems out of place on the album.
