Now look at ║ │ │║ the artwork: giant prehistoric creatures ║ │ │║ sporting cybernetic attachments, shooting lasers ║ │ │║ from their mouths at flying saucers from outer ║ │ │║ space. Now that youÆve had time to let all that ║ │ │║ sink in, itÆs time to look at the song titles: ║ │ │║ ôSaurus Infernus Galacticusö, ôLazer Tooth ║ │ │║ Tigerö, ôRazorblade RaptoröàFucking ôRazorblade ║ │ │║ Raptorö?!? Without hearing a single second, this ║ │ │║ is already the greatest release of 2018. Power ║ │ │║ metallers Victorius shone last year with the ║ │ │║ excellent Heart Of The Phoenix, and with barely ║ │ │║ enough time catch my breath after that, the ║ │ │║ Germans come storming back into action early in ║ │ │║ 2018 with a, frankly stunning, new EP. Yes, itÆs ║ │ │║ exactly what you think it sounds likeàand so ║ │ │║ much better. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Admittedly, the 30-second intro ôSaurus Infernus ║ │ │║ Galacticusö may only consist of distant roars, ║ │ │║ pew-pewing lasers and spaceships in flight, but ║ │ │║ arenÆt brief ambient intros obligatory in this ║ │ │║ sub-genre? It sets the ridiculous mood perfectly ║ │ │║ and lets the listener know to switch off their ║ │ │║ brain and grin for the next 20 minutes. As soon ║ │ │║ as the semi-title-track crashes through the ║ │ │║ speakers, boasting full-on choirs singing æFor ║ │ │║ our king! For our land!Æ, backed by shimmering ║ │ │║ keyboards, all you need do is sit back and ║ │ │║ absorb the hilarity. Either that, or get up off ║ │ │║ your pathetic human ass and air-guitar around ║ │ │║ your room. Every trait of VictoriusÆs addictive ║ │ │║ sound is present: the blazing speed, catchy ║ │ │║ choruses, shredtastic lead guitar work û but ║ │ │║ this time around there is an added spacey layer ║ │ │║ from the keys which elevates the EP beyond ║ │ │║ typical power metal pomp, and into completely ║ │ │║ overblown territory. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ The production quality is superb û metallic and ║ │ │║ snappy but bombastic at all the right points. I ║ │ │║ especially love that crisp snare sound the band ║ │ │║ have retained throughout all their releases. ║ │ │║ Vocalist David Ba▀in sounds as charismatic as ║ │ │║ ever, proving both melodically smooth û such as ║ │ │║ the chorus of ôLazer Tooth Tigerö û and sharply ║ │ │║ venomous û like the vicious refrain to ║ │ │║ ôRazorblade Raptorö. Flo and DirkÆs guitar solo ║ │ │║ trade-offs are absolutely frenetic, and when ║ │ │║ backed up by the insanely tight rhythm section, ║ │ │║ it creates an atmosphere of pure energy. ThatÆs ║ │ │║ before we even get to the songwritingà Dinosaur ║ │ │║ Warfare consists of five brand new frenzied and ║ │ │║ frantic power metal anthems û and I mean ║ │ │║ æanthemsÆ! The lyrical absurdity only amplifies ║ │ │║ the fun singalong factor. It is far more ║ │ │║ enjoyable to cry out æMIGHTY LEGEND OF THE ║ │ │║ DIIIIIIINOSAAAAAUR!Æ than it would be to ramble ║ │ │║ on and on about philosophical musings. For godÆs ║ │ │║ sake, they even exclaim æitÆs morphinÆ time!Æ at ║ │ │║ one point! To quote thrash metallers Lich King: ║ │ │║ æmetalÆs supposed to be fun!Æ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Closing track ôFlames Of Armageddonö is the sore ║ │ │║ thumb of the EP. Still an amazing power metal ║ │ │║ track in its own right, but itÆs thematically ║ │ │║ more serious in tone and perhaps shows potential ║ │ │║ for where future releases may go when theyÆve ║ │ │║ exhausted their comical side. Cynics may accuse ║ │ │║ Victorius of stagnation throughout this record, ║ │ │║ seeing as the first three tracks are all of the ║ │ │║ double-kick, up-tempo, galloping, catchy chorus ║ │ │║ variety. But when a band sounds this hungry, ║ │ │║ vibrant and eager to entertain û the whole vibe ║ │ │║ becomes irresistible. Besides, if you get ║ │ │║ sceptical after track three, ôRazorblade Raptorö ║ │ │║ will melt the frown off your face with its ║ │ │║ ferocious riff and dangerously addictive chorus. ║ │ │║ The unusual rhythmical flow and varied tempos ║ │ │║ make this easily the highlight of the EP. If ║ │ │║ youÆre a metalhead whoÆs not afraid to smile, or ║ │ │║ doesnÆt take themselves too seriously û it ║ │ │║ appears the Germans have catered specifically to ║ │ │║ you. Blistering pace, infectious melodies, ║ │ │║ hilarious theme, and immense entertainment value ║ │ │║ û Dinosaur Warfare may well be the best EP of ║ │ │║ 2018. I know itÆs only the 7th of January, but ║ │ │║ IÆm that confident.
