If I had to ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ relegate former F/i member Richard FraneckiÆs ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ Vocokesh project to one end of this spectrum, it ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ would be tempting to place them smack dab in the ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ middle. ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ Their latest, The Tenth Corner, is an aural ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ adventure the likes of which my ears have never ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ before experienced. A distinct Krautrock ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ influence can be heard weaving in and out of ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ ôLove Theme From El Topoö, that suggests Can ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ without so much of Michael KaroliÆs guitar ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ noodling. Much of the guitar sound here is ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ treated with harsh analog electronic devices, ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ which eventually builds up into a fearsome wall ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ of sound. Occasionally the cacophony proves to ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ be nearly overwhelming, but good timing always ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ tends to come around and push Vocokesh in a new ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ direction just before things become intolerable. ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ The incredibly spooky ôDesert Song (Zabriskie ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ Point)ö may be my favorite track on The Tenth ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ Corner--five minutes of the most intense ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ synthesized droning I have ever heard except for ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ the periodically eerie incidental music from ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ mid-Seventies Doctor Who. The album ends with ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ the low, mean sounds of ôVibe #4ö, its ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ pseudo-Arabic leanings bring visions of endless ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ desert into sharp focus. ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ This record is probably not for the weak of ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ heart, and I doubt that mainstream pop junkies ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ would be able to stomach (or fathom, for that ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ matter) the intensely rich highs and emotional ▓▓███████▓▓ ▓▓███████▓▓ lows of The Tenth Corner.
