The selection of music played in this CD was the product of intensive research, during which a host of eye-witness accounts and extensive literature was evaluated. The ensemble "Wagners Salonquarttet" plays the pieces on strings and piano, as was usual on the ships of the WHITE STAR LINE ca. 1910: "String orchestras are carried on all steamers ..." (Notes for the First Class Passengers on board of the steamers of the White Star Line, March 1910). The waterborne bands consisting of strings, flute and clarinet or even saxophone that were found on German ships of the time were not customary on vessels flying under the English flag. Even in films, the ship's orchestra is often shown with the wrong instruments. The musicians on the TITANIC were generally split into two groups, entertaining the passengers in the restaurant and the lounge. The instruments played by the members of the Wagners Salonquarttet (violin, viola, piano and double-bass) come very close to the original make-up of the ship's orchestra.
