│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ What a year 1987 was. It marked my start at ║ │
│║ university, my first trip to the US and also my ║ │
│║ first taste of Whitesnake. At that time, ║ │
│║ Whitesnake were supporting Motley Crue in the ║ │
│║ States. And what a wakener this album proved to ║ │
│║ be. 'Still of the Night' must be one of the best ║ │
│║ heavy rock songs written of all time. As well as ║ │
│║ David Coverdale's extremely flexible vocals, it ║ │
│║ combines elements of both heavy rock and ║ │
│║ classical music superbly intertwined with each ║ │
│║ other. John Sykes (guitars), Aynsley Dunbar ║ │
│║ (drums) and Neil Murray (bass) all perform to ║ │
│║ the the best of their abilities to produce ║ │
│║ classics such as the brilliant 'Is this love?', ║ │
│║ the sing along 'Here I go Again' and the ║ │
│║ thunderous 'Bad Boys.' Geoff Nicholls guests as ║ │
│║ keyboardist and though some heavy rock bands ║ │
│║ have shunned the ivories in the past, his ║ │
│║ efforts compliment the album in a spectacular ║ │
│║ way. 1987 is one album where no track can be ║ │
│║ accused of being lame and is a must have not ║ │
│║ only for every rock fan but also for those of a ║ │
│║ different musical leaning. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ This 1987 classic is a must for all Whitesnake ║ │
│║ fans and for all metal fans in general. It also ║ │
│║ ranks as one of the top selling albums of all ║ │
│║ time and sports more than one Billboard ║ │
│║ hit.Whitesnake has been making bluesy type rock ║ │
│║ since the 70's,but this album shows their ║ │
│║ versatility to update to the modern sound. The ║ │
│║ production on this album is fantastic and opens ║ │
│║ with the thundering track"Crying in the Rain" ║ │
│║ and has the in between ballads like "Here I go ║ │
│║ Again" and "Is this Love" and rocks hard all the ║ │
│║ way to the finishing track,"Don't Turn Away" It ║ │
│║ sounds as good today as it did in '87.I ║ │
│║ originally bought it on cassette,but I had to ║ │
│║ have a CD copy of it too. When you hear this ║ │
│║ album,I think you'll agree. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Whitesnake's self-titled release is one of the ║ │
│║ best Rock albums of 80's and with his huge ║ │
│║ history is one of the best Rock albums ever. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Who can forget, "Here I go again", or "Is this ║ │
│║ love" or even "Still of the night", one of the ║ │
│║ biggest anthems of rock history. ║ │
│║ Who can forget an album that was on the Top 5 ║ │
│║ positions of United States for 6 months. Selling ║ │
│║ worldwide over 13 million copies (8 million in ║ │
│║ US), also "Whitesnake" was the album of the year ║ │
│║ 1988. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ I tried to rate all the songs of this historic ║ │
│║ LP ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ 1. Crying in the rain 10/10 ║ │
│║ 2. Bad boys 9/10 ║ │
│║ 3. Still of the night 10/10 ║ │
│║ 4. Here I go again 10/10 ║ │
│║ 5. Give me all your love 9,5/10 ║ │
│║ 6. Is this love 10/10 ║ │
│║ 7. Children of the night 9,5/10 ║ │
│║ 8. Straight for the heart 9/10 ║ │
│║ 9. Dont turn away 9,5/10 ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ It's 1987 and Whitesnake throws in guitarist ║ │
│║ John Sykes. He was from the band Thin Lizzy. ║ │
│║ "The Boys Are Back In Town" was one of Thin ║ │
│║ Lizzy's biggest hits. If you noticed, Thin Lizzy ║ │
│║ didn't have alot of huge guitar solos with John ║ │
│║ Sykes. So, how will he fit into Whitesnake then? ║ │
│║ In the song "Straight To The Heart" a very fast ║ │
│║ guitar solo is present, and it shocked me. This ║ │
│║ song mos def rubbed off me alot, because of the ║ │
│║ guitar solo. It's so incredibly fast. I'm sure ║ │
│║ this also shocked Whitesnake lovers. Also, a new ║ │
│║ version of "Here I Go Again" came out. It wasn't ║ │
│║ so "churchy" as some of my friends say. This ║ │
│║ album has everything, and after this album was ║ │
│║ thrown out there, John Sykes left the band. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ So, 1989 comes around, just about to crack into ║ │
│║ 1990. Whitesnake has a crazy guitarist named ║ │
│║ Steve Vai. He was in David Lee Roth's band, and ║ │
│║ was taught guitar by Joe Satriani who are 4 ║ │
│║ years apart. Steve Vai mos def does a great job. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Basically, Whitesnake's self-titled debut was a ║ │
│║ huge hit, just like Boston's self-titled debut. ║ │
│║ But, it wasn't a debut. So, you need to go out ║ │
│║ and get it if you love classic rock/hair metal. ║ │
│║ What a surprise John Sykes was. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ How do you know when you are listening to ║ │
│║ commerock? When a self-proclaimed hard ║ │
│║ rock/heavy metal band suddenly releases an album ║ │
│║ that your wife or girlfriend likes better then ║ │
│║ you do. I guess even "hard rock" bands have to ║ │
│║ make a living too. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ As far as commerock goes though this is a pretty ║ │
│║ good representative of the genre; I liked the ║ │
│║ unabashedly commercial tracks i.e. "Here I Go ║ │
│║ Again" and "Is This Love" but I found that I ║ │
│║ liked the other tracks even better! ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ "Still of the Night" is my favourite and you ║ │
│║ have to give guitarist, John Sykes, a lot of ║ │
│║ credit as he plays some fantastic guitar on this ║ │
│║ album which makes me wonder why he was replaced ║ │
│║ soon after. Have to admit though that many of ║ │
│║ the riffs he uses he "borrowed" from Jimmy ║ │
│║ Page's Led Zeppelin days (in fact, ║ │
│║ "Stil...Night" is a prime example of this)but ║ │
│║ still he pulls the guitar parts off very well. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ I hope they do remaster this album and even ║ │
│║ release it in a mini-lp package format as that ║ │
│║ should make the whole thing sound and even look ║ │
│║ a lot better. Even in this unremastered version, ║ │
│║ I thought the sound was pretty decent enough so ║ │
│║ overall if you are into commerock, this is a ║ │
│║ good disc to get although you may want to ║ │
│║ imitate me and wait for the remastered version ║ │
│║ that hopefully will come out someday soon. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ This is the one that really brought some well ║ │
│║ deserved popularity to this band. Whitesnake was ║ │
│║ nothing new to the rock-&-roll world but they'd ║ │
│║ gone largely unnoticed until 1987 when they ║ │
│║ released this self titled album. Every song was ║ │
│║ a masterpiece and the album shot the band into ║ │
│║ the spotlight. David Coverdale's tobacco stained ║ │
│║ vocals were at their best and his band was right ║ │
│║ on the money. The album was supported by three ║ │
│║ very flashy videos but it was the music which ║ │
│║ really counted. This album brought in loads of ║ │
│║ fans who went in search of the band's earlier ║ │
│║ albums. They weren't disappointed. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Each of Whitesnake's albums is unique. David ║ │
│║ Coverdale has been and always will be the lead ║ │
│║ singer. It's his band. But the band lineup ║ │
│║ changes with each new record. This tends to keep ║ │
│║ the band fresh and gives the band a different ║ │
│║ sound each time they enter the studio. Along ║ │
│║ with an incredible voice, one of Coverdale's ║ │
│║ strong points is his ability to surround himself ║ │
│║ with the best musicians in the world of ║ │
│║ rock-&-roll. Consequently, each album is a new ║ │
│║ and wonderful rock experience. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ No fan of rock should be without the 1987 ║ │
│║ Whitesnake album. It's great music. And it will ║ │
│║ lead to even more great music. Buy this one if ║ │
│║ you don't already have it. You won't regret the ║ │
│║ purchase. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The year is 1987, hair metal is at the top, and ║ │
│║ Whitesnake releases their big break through ║ │
│║ album. Though this was the bands peak they have ║ │
│║ been making classic blues driven rock since the ║ │
│║ 1970's. 1984's Slide It In suggested this is ║ │
│║ where the band was going with this album which ║ │
│║ brought on a more pop but a more metal sound. ║ │
│║ The tag team of David Coverdale and John Sykes ║ │
│║ on guitar is something out of this world. Though ║ │
│║ this is a very pop oriented album it is one of ║ │
│║ the greatest hard rock/heavy metal albums to ║ │
│║ ever be released. It kicks off with "Crying In ║ │
│║ The Rain" and rocks all the way through to ║ │
│║ "Don't Turn Away". Sandwiched in the middle of ║ │
│║ the album is the mega power ballad "Is This ║ │
│║ Love" which had a memorable video back in '87. ║ │
│║ When hearing the opening guitars by Syke's and ║ │
│║ Coverdale's howling on "Bad Boys" I get the ║ │
│║ chills every single time. This song is f---ing ║ │
│║ metal. Syke's shreds away and performs an ║ │
│║ amazing solo mid way through the song. "Still of ║ │
│║ the Night" is a memorable tune with an ║ │
│║ astonishing guitar break down that knocks me off ║ │
│║ my feet every time I hear it. This album also ║ │
│║ produced what is Whitesnake's biggest hit "Here ║ │
│║ I Go Again" which is recognized as a hard rock ║ │
│║ anthem. The band's follow up Slip of the Tongue ║ │
│║ was very good but I still say that this is the ║ │
│║ definitive Whitesnake album. This album should ║ │
│║ be owned by anyone who considers themselves a ║ │
│║ hard rock/heavy metal fan. If you get the chance ║ │
│║ to see Whitesnake live anytime soon please do ║ │
│║ so. Reb Beach and Doug Aldrich are the two ║ │
│║ current guitarists and it is just unreal to ║ │
│║ witness it live. If you have any doubts about ║ │
│║ this band being metal they have a dvd on the way ║ │
│║ sometime in 2005, pick it up and afterwards ║ │
│║ you'll be picking your jaw off the ground. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ I didn't get to hear the whole album until 1989, ║ │
│║ but I recall Whitesnake's impact in 1987 and ║ │
│║ 1988 with the mileage they had with it! Dynamic ║ │
│║ rock songs here, especially Still Of The Night ║ │
│║ and Here I Go Again. Bad Boys I also like with ║ │
│║ its attitude and fast pace! As I'm writing this, ║ │
│║ the song Is This Love might be playing on some ║ │
│║ stations. Adult contemporary pop stations still ║ │
│║ love this record a good 17 years later! It is a ║ │
│║ well crafted song with its reflective breaks ║ │
│║ that match with the song's lyrics and David ║ │
│║ Coverdale's longing for that woman. I like the ║ │
│║ guitar solo, of which they play it a lot more ║ │
│║ versus the single version. The other members ║ │
│║ such as John Sykes, Vivian Campbell and Adrian ║ │
│║ Vandenburg played an important part in this ║ │
│║ album! I still like Still of The Night, and its ║ │
│║ rocking sections and reflective section in the ║ │
│║ middle before rocking once again. It's kind of ║ │
│║ something Led Zeppelin would do if they had ║ │
│║ continued. This is a phenomenally done effort, ║ │
│║ one of the '80s best albums in terms of the big ║ │
│║ production and bombast! Coverdale matched ║ │
│║ romanticism and emotional sides with aggressive ║ │
│║ rock all in one album with his band! ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ If you grew up in the 80's, like I did, then you ║ │
│║ know this album brings back alot of great ║ │
│║ memories. To quickly answer one of my fellow ║ │
│║ reviewers, John Sykes came out of Thin Lizzy ║ │
│║ after Gary Moore left and Phil Lynott died from ║ │
│║ a overdose and a broken heart. I also recommend ║ │
│║ most everything from Thin Lizzy, too. Me and my ║ │
│║ 2nd best friend used to crank this album ║ │
│║ (cassette)up every morning before school and on ║ │
│║ the weekends cruising around in his father's '82 ║ │
│║ black Cross-fire injected Corvette Stingray. ║ │
│║ John Sykes is, by far, one of the best ║ │
│║ rock/metal guitarists in the world! If you love ║ │
│║ his sound like I do, go out and get his band ║ │
│║ Blue Murder, as well. John's vocals are ║ │
│║ reminiscent of Coverdale and Phil Lynott on his ║ │
│║ records. Many of the guys who recorded this ║ │
│║ album left for different reasons before all of ║ │
│║ the videos were made with Rudy and Vivian in ║ │
│║ them. Vivian should have stayed in Dio and ║ │
│║ continued to shred like he used to, in my humble ║ │
│║ opinion, but I digress. ║ │
│║ Every song is pretty much a good rocker. I ║ │
│║ normally skip over 'straight from the heart', ║ │
│║ but it's definately a great road trip or party ║ │
│║ album. David Coverdale comes from that school of ║ │
│║ vocalists like Dio, Ian Gillan, Paul Rodgers and ║ │
│║ of course Robert Plant, and he has never sounded ║ │
│║ better than on this album, I believe, due to the ║ │
│║ slick, and masterful production that was ║ │
│║ produced on this album. Although I feel corny ║ │
│║ sometimes when this cd is played at get ║ │
│║ togethers today because I used to dis many ║ │
│║ hairbands that, looking back, I really liked, I ║ │
│║ realize how good this album really was, and how ║ │
│║ great the musicians were who played on this ║ │
│║ album. All things with Coverdale and/or Sykes in ║ │
│║ them, in my opinion is a winner! Get this ║ │
│║ classic monster record and take an hour or so ║ │
│║ trip back to yesteryear. If you really want to ║ │
│║ hear a massive shredding solo, check out my man ║ │
│║ John Sykes ripping it up on 'BAD BOYS'.. track ║ │
│║ 2. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ By the time the 80's had rolled around ║ │
│║ Whitesnake had been making albums for about ║ │
│║ decade, so they had time to perfect their ║ │
│║ craft.1987 was finally their year, 1984's Slide ║ │
│║ it In had became a minor hit, which helped pave ║ │
│║ the way for the 1987 to become a smash hit. The ║ │
│║ opener of the album is Crying in the Rain, which ║ │
│║ had originally appeared on their 1982 album ║ │
│║ Saints and Sinners, Here I go Again was also a ║ │
│║ rerecording of a song that appeared on Saints ║ │
│║ and Sinners. Besides Crying in the Rain, and ║ │
│║ Here I go Again, other highlights include The ║ │
│║ Still of the Night,Give me all your love, and ║ │
│║ the rest of the songs are awesome too! ║ │
│║ Whitesnake is the essential 1980's album, buy it ║ │
│║ today! ║ │
