I knew they had it in █ █ them all along but man, Wiegedood really █ █ close out the trilogy on a high note with █ █ this brilliant third installment. While the █ █ progressive black metal style is still █ █ firmly intact here, the band has introduced █ █ a certain nightmarish quality to their █ █ guitars here that I didn't find on the █ █ previous two, with a lot of minor key █ █ playing, dark, brutal breakdowns and sharp, █ █ razor-sharp guitar tunes. █ █ █ █ "Prowl" kicks the album off brilliantly with █ █ a blood-curdling scream that leads right █ █ into a Slayer-derived triplet riff on the █ █ guitars filtered through some classic black █ █ metal mixing. The progression of the guitars █ █ above the vocals is fantastic as well, as █ █ they breakdown on the chorus following the █ █ vocals back into the madness. "Doodskalm"(or █ █ Death Stone) hardly lets up as well with █ █ some more traditional black tremolo picking █ █ and some ingenious cymbal-heavy drumming █ █ from Wim Coppers, also the drummer for █ █ Oathbreaker who you really need to check out █ █ if you haven't yet. the song then sharply █ █ nosedives into a solemn arpeggiated guitar █ █ passage for bursting into a fantastic array █ █ of cinematic instrumentation that just comes █ █ off triumphant, and kind of gorgeous. █ █ █ █ And after that we get the centerpiece title █ █ track of the record, which kicks off with a █ █ slow, building minimal guitar passage that █ █ looms in the shadows, before climbing into a █ █ foreboding instrumental passage with this █ █ headbanger of a chordal descending riff to █ █ delve the record even further into darkness. █ █ I especially like the un-tethered vocals on █ █ this track that work really well with the █ █ instrumentation. I actually do think the █ █ track goes on for a little too long before █ █ diving into an instrumental transition, but █ █ it works back its momentum with some furious █ █ playing on the back end that is incredibly █ █ fiery. From there we get the closing song █ █ "Parool", which actually interestingly means █ █ "Parole" in dutch, and has yet another █ █ haunting, evocative black metal riff behind █ █ a really great blast beat on the drums. The █ █ aesthetic of the track is almost gothic in a █ █ weird way, but the tempo takes into a █ █ different area of eerie darkness that for me █ █ is really oppressive. It's all done quite █ █ well, and the blazing fast coda serves as a █ █ solid closer to the record. █ █ █ █ Overall, this is certainly an impressive █ █ black metal release that will go down as one █ █ of if not the best of the year. It's dark, █ █ it's ugly, and it's unrelenting, and mostly █ █ the guitar tones are just a huge step up in █ █ contributing to that cold, scary environment █ █ the band goes for while still maintaining █ █ that astral, starry edge, which for me is █ █ really the draw of atmo black at its core. █ █ An impressive record, and while I think the █ █ title track could've been much shorter for █ █ how many transitions it had, and that the █ █ opening track while still good felt a tad █ █ out of tune with the rest of the album, I █ █ really don't have much else to complain █ █ about.
