Willem Vermandere is a Belgian ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ musician who makes 'kleinkunst' as it is known ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ here. He sings in a Dutch dialect about everyday ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ stories but with a lot of humour and fantasy. It's ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ quite difficult to find much info about him on the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ web, at least when you're trying to find something ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ in English that is. He lives in 'de Westhoek', ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ which is the rural part of Flanders next to the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ sea, bordering France and enclosed by a river named ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ 'De Ijzer'. It's a region which is mostly known for ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ it's innumerable graveyards of soldiers that died ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ there during world war I (even though the rest of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Belgium was occupied, fighting went on here during ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the whole four-year period after it had being ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ flooded at the beginning of the war). willem ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Vermandere is mostly known for his 'storytelling' ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ lyrics. Of course if you don't understand the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ language you're sure to miss a lot. But ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ nevertheless: the music itself is definitely worth ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ listening to even without any knowledge to what he ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ sings about. Some cd's have been released with ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ solely instrumental music because of so much demand ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ for it. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ (eq: Willem_Vermandere_-_Omzwervingen-(2002)-LOGOS ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ released 2002-05-11, thumbs up for logos, always ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ knowing where to find good music :-) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Back in the days when I was still in University I ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ remember being pleasantly surprised he was so ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ popular there. As at most universities students ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ exchanged a lot of music on the intranet, of course ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the usual suspects that are still to be found in ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the scene but also this artist which was by far the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ most requested 'Dutch' singer. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ This album contains two of his most famous songs, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ 'Myn mensch'n van te lande' and 'Blanche en zijn ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ peird'. But it has more on offer, listen to 'de ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ brulofte van Kanna' and 'de verloren zeune' which ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ were also some of his very first songs (in a time ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ when he didn't himself write the lyrics) and remark ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the joyous music he can make. I also like 'Piere, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ de Beeste' and 'Van nen boom', the former rather ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ 'humane', the latter, well, about a tree. I could ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ continue... ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Since I'm quite fond of this music, ever since my ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ childhood, I'll go through the little trouble to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ translate a song of him which is one of my ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ favourites. It's quite impossible to translate his ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ vivid dialect language (especially since my english ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ may not be too fluent), but I'll do my best just to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ give you one impression of his storytelling: ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Le Tour Du Monde (track 10) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ In the house of my father, in the attic forgotten, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ lay an old book half devored by worms ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and more than once I crept up the attic on my knees ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ quiet as a mouse to look at this book. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Even though it was in a language I didn't ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ understand ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ still I lay there hours with this book on the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ground ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ because most of all the drawings amazed me so ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ "le tour du monde d'un gamin de Paris" ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ [the voyage around the world by a boy from Paris] ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The ship which carried us, full of treasures aboard ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ went down on the cliffs, all passengers drowned ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ no I'd be lying, six sailors with a beard ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ survived the disaster and were saved ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ We walked through forests a baton in our hand ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ weeks and months through an unknown country ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ wild animals and people jumped out the green ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ everywhere ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ but with seven strong men ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ much we didn't have to do ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Endless deserts with nothing but sand ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ always up and down and a sun burning ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ after every hill bandits keeping on eye on us ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ getting through it all was a devilish tour ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Somewhat later we had seven horses ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ seven horses gallopping ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ in ever more strange territories mountain down and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ up ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ passing white villages full of music and singing ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ I would have stayed there my whole life long ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ But an impossible yearning kept us going ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ a day of rest was soon disturbed ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ there you could see us stumbling through the snow ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ blinded ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ fighting with wolves in the sharp wind ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Guest with emperors and kings we were ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ censored and groped by negroes and indians ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ we slept in palaces or just on the ground ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ greeted as princes or chased away as a dog ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ We grew quiet, slim and tired ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ of the endless wandering not knowing where to go ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ will this voyage never end ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ why and for whom and what had I been looking for ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The years have flown away and the book has been ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ burned ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ but the story continues, now I've ended up here ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and it learned me to always go on ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ but to where, no I never understood ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ So, I hope you'll enjoy this release.
