That one thing is that the sheep are sure to follow. It's not a pessimistic point of view. The fact is that it is as predictable as the sun rising each morning. On the back of Evanescence's success with Fallen in 2003, it wasn't long until more bands emerged in the same vein. But there are always those who started doing whatever it is way back when well before any one artist made it as far as the charts etc are concerned. That is where Dutch group Within Temptation come into the picture as they well and truly pre-date Amy Lee and Co. Formed in 1996 by vocalist Sharon den Adel and guitarist Robert Westerholt, the band was completed with guitarist Ruud Jolie, bassist Jeroen Van Veen, drummer Stephen van Haestregt and keyboardist Martijn Spierenburg. Their first release, 1997's Enter, made a few waves and did particularly well in their homeland, but it was 2000's Mother Earth that really started to get the ball rolling for the band on a bigger scale. It's follow up, The Silent Force was released in Europe last year and it's finally seeing the light of day throughout the rest of the world almost 12 months later. The symphonic Intro builds as den Adel's hauntingly angelic voice takes over towards the lead in to the very Nightwish sounding See Who I Am which, along with Jillian (I'd Give My Heart) and Forsaken, is one of the dare I say heavier gothic metal numbers on here. The first single from the album, Stand My Ground, has radio hit written all over it but time will tell if the masses take to it as they did with Evanescence a couple of years ago. The soft, dream-like number Pale is one of several tracks on here that introduce Within Temptations first use of electronic effects as a part of their music - something that is sure to divide fans. Angels, Memories and Aquarius fail to show any real distinct variation from one another and whilst they are not bad songs, they're not standout tracks either. It's The Fear is a little quicker in it's pace and definitely has the potential for single material and either way, it's still one of the stronger tracks on The Silent Force. Somewhere reprises the feel of Pale before we are treated to two UK bonus tracks. The first, Destroyed, crosses the lines of Lacuna Coil, Nightwish and Evanescence if you can imagine such a breed as opposed to Jane Doe which has more of a Nightwish element to it. If you've never been a fan of this style of rock/metal before, then this album won't be changing your opinion any time soon. The Silent Force doesn't show much of an extension from their acclaimed Mother Earth album but at a guess, the introduction of some electronic effects into the mix is sure to be a talking point amongst purists.
