These guys really █ █ get the idea that doom is all about atmosphere █ █ even when the riffs are functioning nicely, and █ █ that's why I can say that I enjoy both the █ █ acoustic introduction to songs like 'Where There █ █ Is No Spring' and the crushing roar of slowly █ █ striding guitars and windswept vocals. The album █ █ feels spacious and passionate at both high and low █ █ ebb, the oddly romantic spoken word of the quiet █ █ sections giving way to Anton Bandurin's full-on █ █ deathly tone and swelling with the use of massive █ █ lead guitar melodies into crescendos that go on █ █ and on like a film score. █ █ I know that I've blown my load in the first █ █ paragraph, but that's just fine because Amber █ █ Tears know no difference between opening songs and █ █ closing songs, sticking to a similar theme █ █ throughout all five lengthy tracks. The 10 minute █ █ closer might steal my vote for best, not only █ █ because of the enormity of sections being █ █ introduced with keys and melodies soaring above █ █ the leaden rhythmic struggle, but also due to an █ █ incredibly effective lead sequence right from My █ █ Dying Bride's mid-period of straight-up solemn █ █ doom. Even more so than MDB during that period █ █ around The Light at the End of the World, Amber █ █ Tears don't rely on death metal techniques to make █ █ the compositions heavier, just surrounding the █ █ listener with thunderous sloth and emotional █ █ resonance instead of threatening or aggressive █ █ changes of pace. As such, the experience of █ █ listening to When No Trails is liberating and █ █ strengthening, since the ethos of doom like this █ █ is to make a virtue of struggle and sometimes of █ █ failure too. However, Amber Tears feel like █ █ winners because of the heroic effort put into the █ █ vocals and the relaxed redemption of the clean and █ █ ambient parts. █ █ Potentially, fans of Amorphis and Isole will be █ █ drawn to this sprawling doom landscape, since both █ █ revel in the outdoor feeling that When No Trails █ █ attempts to create. Even the simple cover art █ █ expresses a knowledge of the musical effect of █ █ songs like 'Under the Stars Light', which feels █ █ like a hike up a tree-covered mountain in the █ █ misty drizzle of a grey morning; at the summit a █ █ guitar solo unfolds in pure joy like a vista █ █ hard-won, and that's when you know the climb was █ █ worthwhile. Other than through that kind of █ █ imagery, it's difficult to say why Amber Tears do █ █ such a good job on this effort, seeing as the █ █ songs are very much of a set and remain at a █ █ similar pace throughout. Those unused to the █ █ slower subgenres of metal might take some time to █ █ build an appreciation of the style, yet an album █ █ like this can capture the listener in another █ █ world for the entire 40 minutes, dreaming of █ █ fantastic visions and endless intervening █ █ difficulties as the pieces fit into one another █ █ almost without break.
