I'd gone along to one ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ of those Music Villages in Holland Park circa 1984 ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ to see the Bagamoyo Musicians from Tanzania, and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ was pinned to the turf by one of the most amazing ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ voices I'd ever heard--plus a truly inventive ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ palette of sounds out of numerous Tanzanian ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ traditional instruments. And he's got even better ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ since then! Canadian producer/ guitarist Michael ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Brook has a track record for doing the right thing ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ by major roots music originals like Nusrat Fateh ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Ali Khan and Djivan Gasparyan. The Zawose/Brook ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ piece on Real World's Spirit Of Africa compilation ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ last year leaped out of the set, so to say that ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ I've been eagerly expecting this whole ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ collaborative album is an understatement. Fear not, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ it doesn't disappoint. Even Zawose's purely ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ acoustic albums have their fair share of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ astonishing sound textures. His range of "thumb ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ pianos" (ilimba) with their inbuilt natural ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ reverbs, buzzes and distortions, his equally ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ other-worldly bowed instruments (iseze), and his ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ truly remarkable voice which has an extraordinary ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ range, with yodel-like breaks and elements of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ throat singing, combine to produce textures and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ atmospheres that makes some electronic music sound ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ tame by comparison. And in recent years this effect ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ has been doubled as he now usually works in duo, as ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ here, with his talented nephew/ protΘgΘ Charles ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Zawose. To add something truly worthwhile to all ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ that must have been a daunting task, but Brook has ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ done an incredible job. The press release details ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ weeks of work by Brook and engineer Richard Evans ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ pitch-shifting backing tracks and overdubs to match ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the tuning of traditional instruments and vice ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ versa. The resulting sound, with funky, skilful ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ keyboard, drum, bass and brass programming is ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ absolutely enormous, but completely in sympathy ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ with the Zawoses, so everything rings as sweet as a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ bell. You are left in no doubt that Brook and Evans ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ (who has recorded Zawose's "conventional" work for ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Real World in the past) have got right inside the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ source: this is about as far from the stereotypical ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ western DJ/remixer dabbling with "exotic" sounds as ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ you can get. And needless to say, Brook's own ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ musical contributions--including of course his ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ famous "infinite guitar"--are completely on the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ case. A nice extra touch is some vocals by Marie ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ "Zap Mama" Daulne who was apparently inspired by ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Zawose at an impressionable age. In these days of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ information overkill, with too many CDs and too ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ little time, can any of us get to play records like ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ this over and over, the way they deserve for the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ work that's gone into them? We certainly should. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Every now and then, but still rarely, an album ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ comes along that can justifiably be described as a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ landmark. Credit to Real World who have come up ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ with a few of those in the past, but right this ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ moment Assembly feels like it's nudging ahead of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ pretty much everything else that's been attempted ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ in this field so far.
