Rapidly gaining a reputation as purveyors of distinctive melodic sounds that capture the imagination and transport listeners to a another world, about : river return to Particles with Round Table Jams In Between. about : river have hit the ground running since a November 2018 debut for Easy Summer. Originally formed by Oleg Ivanov, son, Ervin joined forces with his father in 2019, providing organic musical instrumentation via clarinet and keyboard that provided the perfect counterweight to Oleg's electronic production methods. A host of impressive releases can thus be attributed to the about : river pseudonym with their music finding its way on to the likes of Nie Wieder Schlafen, Dream Culture and Oleeva Records the latter responsible for the beautiful and enigmatic, Nine Days Ago I Saw You Near the Sea in February 2022. First finding their way on to Particles via a remix of Davide Ferrario's End of an Era, June 2021 saw the release of the duo's debut original offering in the shape of Go into the Mist. A further remix of Erdi Irmak's Ndarasika followed in August as about : river return with the conceptual album, Round Table Jams In Between. Opening proceedings, Continuum glides across its 18-minute timeframe. Gently swaying and evolving via a swathe of textures and synth phrases, a rhythm section infused in tape delay gradually filters into sonic range as it swims across the stereo spectrum. Horizon continues the penchant for delay-soaked rhythms and textured landscapes as the track waxes and wanes alongside a heavily modulated pad and beautifully crafted piano motifs that melt into the sonic distance. Melodic themes transform themselves over the 16-minute piece that is a joy to behold. At over 21 minutes, Somewhere creates a musical voyage in the truest sense of the term. Full of innovative sonic pictures and evolving musical sequences, the track generates new textures and melodies out of the infinite delay loops. Meandering and wandering with ease without ever feeling laboured or repetitive, the track continues to impress and entertain even as it builds to a rousing zenith at the 16-minute mark. Dark Snow sees a glorious arpeggio ripple outward, holding firm in filtered fashion as textured pads sit atop in pitched and stereo-panned fashion, while First Journey mesmerises with intricate rhythmic structure and discordant synth phrasing. In Between witnesses a subtle shift to complementary melodic phrases as gorgeous arpeggios whisper gently from the distance, building effortlessly against beautiful piano sequences and smooth motifs. Redolent in intoxicating synths that flow in fluid patterns, Lost Flower closes the album with its expansive soundscapes. A heavy kick and analogue percussion provide weight as the track delights through its sonic intensity.
