When the sun is still rising on another day, bringing with its ascension an opportunity to start fresh. A chance to define a new beginning filled with endless possibilities and to make dreams from the previous night into reality. With her latest EP Prisms, alice.km defines a new beginning for her career as an artist, and its host label, Lots of Practice defines a new beginning for their catalog with their first melodic house and techno release. This EP is the most extensive, intuitive, and intricate body of work alice.km has ever shared. With five tracks in total, Prisms represents the sheer level of talent and skill she brings to her production process as well as her ability to paint cinematic landscapes with electronic music. Prisms opens with a piece of music entitled Cazimi, which is an Arabic term meaning heart of the sun. This definition succinctly aligns with incendiary motion and incandescent synth work in the track that glows brighter and brighter with every passing kick across its near-seven minutes. Next is the lead single from the EP, Crystalline, which captures the essence of such an angular and geological structure through the implementation of electric guitar. Consistent, legato strums and plucks create a sonic perimeter inside of which the other sounds pressurize and morph into a glassy and geometric form. Once again expertly tapping into the meaning of the title, light and darkness are of equal influence on Equinox, identical to how day and night are of equal length when the seasons change. An energetic drum kit with danceable inclinations runs throughout the cut while minor key melodies maintain a balance of warm and cold like a sunny day in the frigid city that inspired the following track, Denver. Except in this aural interpretation of the mile-high metropolis, snowflakes are transmuted into shakers and other minimalist percussion instruments, hovering over the snowstorm of arpeggios and longform droning bass that slowly but surely creeps in. Closing out Prisms is Cancer Season, (which begins every June) and in line with a Summer morning, the beat is gradual and intentional like the preparation for what's to come. Different midrange elements pass around and through and alongside one another, like morning thoughts before they become goals for the day. On many mornings, it is the goal of alice.km to create ethereal, gritty, imaginative music. But where she goes from there is a mystery. With the Prisms EP she adds a thrilling chapter to that mystery, one that will soon include many more chapters that will begin on many more mornings to come.
