if this compilation suddenly creates a new standard, the people
over at desco records might even be bothered. of course electronic
watusi boogaloo have yet to make any claims about "guaranteed
spacey, spacey funk" (which they might want to do soon if they're
smart), but this is the spaciest, most twisted variations on
boogaloo that i'd never even guess anyone would ever consider
making. think of it this way: the chachacha with a backbeat, or
the point at which latin music, jazz, and soul music intertwined
in the mid-'60s, suddenly taken over by computers, crazy
electronics, samples, and sometimes drum 'n' bass. this is what
this compilation is all about. does it make any sense? no, not at
all, none. which is the beauty of it all. when things that seem
unlikely, things that don't seem like they should be done, are
done, and done well, you end up with records like this. who would
think? someone did, and they pulled together mains ignition,
babalu, oh polo, and biowire (none of whom i've ever heard and who
are swedish!) to create these absurd variations on a largely
forgotten dance style. no doubt mains ignition are the standout
project on this release, with enough moaning sinewaves,
complicated bass lines, and quirky sounds and sampled noises (or
distorted vocal tracks) to display a true artistry around the
boogaloo rhythm. biowire do a progressive drum 'n' bass treatment
to the style. oh polo are all over the place with drum 'n' bass,
now sound, and dub reworkings. and babalu turns up the breakbeat
voltage, with sampling loops and sublime melodies in their pieces.
this is a strong introduction to, hopefully, full length albums by
these inspiring artists. the only regret: no one did a potentially
seizure-inducing cover of joe loco's "bang bang". fans of boogaloo
(duh), fans of funk, soul, old school latin music, and of course
fans of experimental directions in electronic music, will no doubt
either be overjoyed, or just confused. i am both at the same time,
and there's nothing else like it, which makes it all the more
glorious.
