Alien Deviant Circus play industrial black metal. That means industrial
metal + black metal. Let's start with black metal. The guitar sound is
"black metal-ish" at 95 per cent, as well as a good part of the riffs is
typically "black metal-ish". There is almost no "industrial-ish" guitar
on the whole album. Quite the contrary: in the second half of the second
song "Hiranya - Garbha (shakti)" there is even a thrash metal riff. In
the third song "Aham Tattva" the guitar fingering is played ù again
typically "black metal-ish" (well, almost typically). The drum-machine
knocks this guitar passage diligently, making this part of the song
totalitarian and insane at once. By the way, this is the most black
metal song on the album.
As for the bass on "Ananta Abhava", the bass parts are also mostly
classical ones for black metal, and the bass sound doesn't particularly
deviate from the canons of the genre, unless it was used too many
effects for it. But it makes the bass sounding as if it comes from the
grave, and it's a big plus for the (necro) atmosphere of the album.
The vocals are mainly screaming. The voice is not typical for black
metal ù not so high and shrill ù but it keeps within the genre too. The
first song "AP (nada)" doesn't have a lot of vocals in it, but further
the vocalist gets his own back. The fifth song "Maha Pralaya
(pradhamsa-abhava)" is the peak of his work on "Ananta Abhava", he sings
by screaming to a black industrial "orchestral" accompaniment very
carefully here. Impressive stuff!
Alien Deviant Circus also use ritual chants, but the vocals are flooded
in these places (judging by the first song), so it is not very clear
whether the singer sings on a note or not. And besides: is it whether a
vocal or a looped sample. "Ananta Abhava" has not been without female
vocals ù just a little bit: the first song goes into the second
("Hiranya - Garbha (shakti)") with the sample of the high female
"cathedral" chant.
Now the turn came for "industrial metal". It is clear that the
industrial component is obtained by the drum-machine. We all know that
if a drum-machine dominates the sound and there is a "black metal-ish"
guitar, it's hard not to hear Mysticum. Indeed, middle tempo Mysticum
with most of its signature techniques is heard very often on "Ananta
Abhava". Maybe that's why Alien Deviant Circus create songs mostly at a
slow and medium tempo. And here I must pay tribute to the creators, they
increase the suspense skillfully, while gradually strengthening the hard
dark/unmanned atmosphere. It seems they don't risk to accelerate to
mind-boggling speeds, because then there would be nothing left of Alien
Deviant Circus. It would be pure and simple Mysticum.
The sound of the drum-machine is remarkable, it is overloaded, some
dirty. Sometimes it is impossible to understand what kind of "drum" or
"cymbal" sounds ("snare", "hi-hat", "kick", etc.). The drum-machine
nearly exhausts the listener with its callousness and monotony. Its dead
mechanical sound is a trademark of industrial black metal, as I
understand. You have to have the strength and courage to listen to this
material for almost 70 minutes.
Perhaps that is why the musicians give the listener a rest for the ears,
prefacing their songs with long ambient intros (only the third and fifth
songs have short intros ù some warnings, rather symbolic). The
introduction to the first song is full of Indian (or Tibetan) musical
motifs. Or more accurately "Indian / Tibetan musical motifs" in European
understanding. Intro to the second song is an ambient one with a verbose
(occult) recitative. While the fourth track "Mrityu Moksha (vac)" begins
with a pure EBM act.
This fourth composition contains a fair share of classical martial
industrial ù both in rhythm and in music. Perhaps this is the darkest
track on "Ananta Abhava". By the way, there is the only guitar solo on
the album here in "Mrityu Moksha (vac)". And the farther in, the deeper:
in the fifth song (or rather, in its third part ù after the ambient
insertion with electronic gurgling and very gloomy primitive
synthesizer) you can hear an almost funeral march-like melody.
However, I can't identify the atmosphere of this album as perfectly grim
and totalitarian. The rhythmic figure systematically ù and too often ù
converts to the rhythm that sounds like "pum-pa pum-pa pum-pa"
(syncopated rhythm, if you need accuracy). It's not industrial black
metal, it's not martial industrial, it's some kind of dance. This
"pum-pa pum-pa pum-pa" makes you want to jig about, and with such a
background there is no possibility to think about high matter. Or energy
(according to the booklet recommendations). In the first song "AP
(nada)" this rhythm interchanges with the ritual chants and ù oh, maybe
I don't understand something ù it is the greatest crime against
dark/necro harmonization on this album. And please, don't tell me that
Mysticum use that "pum-pa pum-pa pum-pa" too!
I guess the lyrics are based on tantric mysticism, but I'm not sure,
that is out of my range. Nevertheless, the booklet is filled with
mandala-like schematic images: some of them look original, others are
just a modern ("industrial") stylization. To be honest, I don't
understand and don't support flirting with Hindu / Tibetan occultism.

In seven years, industrial black metallers Alien Deviant Circus have
already launched three albums, being the third one titled ôAnanta
Abhavaö which was released in January via Necrocosm, the French label
that mainly promotes industrial metal.
Twenty two minutes of running time is the length of the first track ôAP
(nada)ö that presents a slow and mid-tempo pace in a militarist taste
that fills the whole musical canvas like if it was a bio-mechanical army
on the march. The industrial sounds united with the repetitive and
spiral guitar riffs create a full warlike hypnosis. While the song
evolves, everything gets more chaotic and claustrophobic, but also more
embodied. ôHiranya û Garbha (shakti)ö follows up with its nineteen
minutes of duration in which the first four minutes are comprised by a
long speech that will burst into a, once again, mechanical song which is
deprived of melody, but this time shown in a groovy vein. The musical
repetition keeps on, but itÆs not so hypnotic and the highly aggressive
vocals are more constant. However, the industrial side is a little bit
more evident due to the metallic percussion. In addition, there are some
ritualistic choirs forming a spiritual aura always with a highlighted
industrial background on its peak. The other tracks are way shorter and
follow the same line of the previous ones, thus bringing nothing new to
the bandÆs sound itself. Even so, the guitar riffs are more worked out
and even more perceptible.
As a final note, sometimes this kind of music tends to be synthetic due
to utilization of non-organic instruments and sounds, but with Alien
Deviant Circus it seems that everything fits quite well; the production
is compact and it sounds like a united musical body.
