Let the Beast Run Wild 4:46 37:05 Some solid Vancouver speed metal here, as dingy and vile as the downtown metropolis Assault so earnestly represent. The only reason you might actually care about this band at first blush is the fact that this was Ray Hartmann's hardly-humble abode before jumping ship and joining then-burgeoning Annihilator. Hartmann has a relatively multifarious resume that I have already checked out partially, including acts like Random Damage; he continues to remain a busy musician to this day. Survival in the Street, while arguably dated even at the time of its release, still has some glint left amidst its now-obsidian carapace and delivers plenty of classic metal tropes, razing a rather broad swath of urban terrain in the process. The cover artwork screams early Iron Maiden, yet the music is of a more ballistic and less refined caliber. Straight out of the dustbins and annals of obscurity, Assault deliver plenty of Judas Priest-quality riffs laced with a more knuckle-cracking, streetwise zest when cornered. Think Scanner meets early Queensr che with a hankering for more anthem-esque refrains and now we're starting to get somewhere. Dunaway's range is limited, but he is wise enough to work his pugilistic magic via attitude over inveigling stratosphere-breaching high notes. The NWOBHM thunder interwoven throughout the electric title track and progressive, Warning-inspired "I.C.U.C." envelops the cityscape in blinding, raw power, and the cavernous, potential-drenched performance of Hartmann behind the drums proves that this project truly could have gone somewhere if they arrived a few years earlier. Tight, venomous, and not artistically bankrupt when it comes to playing recycled styles, Assault had some pretty big guns at the ready. What sucks though is that the final product was butchered and/or pieced together due to what I can only assume is a lack of funds/resources/time. The band managed to spit out a relatively coherent full-length record here from a structural standpoint, but the tracks actually come from two entirely different recording sections. The last few tracks sound a bit of a mess, with the pre-chorus of the strongest overall tune ("The Fire Within") basically missing altogether due to Dunaway's "fifty feet of drainage tube" vocal effects. The only skippable tune here is "Shuffle Off to Buffalo," which sounds totally out of place and was most likely an eleventh hour space-filler of sorts. Concerning the rest of the album, we have nothing exceedingly complicated in terms of the raw rhythmic patterns, but an appreciable level of vocal grit and powerful solos courtesy of Zgaljic more than bear the load. The brazen guitar tones skitters by without taking too much damage due to nostalgic appeal, and I can find a use for nearly all of these tunes in both isolation and on the longplay. Assault warned us that future Vancouver will be just as dangerous a shithole as it is today, and other than serving as a springboard for at least one successful career, it is refreshing to know that the material largely holds up today. Survival in the Street is in sore need of a remaster, but this record butters my bread just fine as it stands. Cut out the stinker "Shuffle Off to Buffalo" and enjoy relatively consistent flow throughout, with highlights including the already mentioned and classy "The Fire Within" and the redeeming anthem "Thunder Road." I'd say this is working very much as intended, and is a recommended pickup if you can actually find it.
