Atena are definitely different to the normal bands I listen to. One could argue that I have a very blinkered view of the metal music industry but I defy anyone to have found a band like this. I could draw comparisons to other bands but nothing is as unique as Atena. Pushed, IÆd say metalcore with a little bit of Tesseract and a little bit of In Flames, however you can hear hip hop and classical thrown into the mix. Drowning Regret & Lungs Filled With Water is due for release in late January on indie records. You get the theme of the album from the title and yes, the content is quite grim. IÆd have to say it is a type of concept album, all the songs tell an overall story but when you mention concept, people start to think of Mindcrime by Queensryche or maybe The Wall by Pink Floyd. The idea is the same but the style of music is totally different. Progression, insightful and new. Most certainly not classic rock. If you listen to this album then please, listen to it in full. Whereas a couple of tracks can be played as stand-alone songs, you really only get the full effect of the craftsmanship of this album when played from end to end ( the downside to modern technology and Spotify where the shuffle button is nearly always turned on). You are introduced to the album by a short intro then Born Rotten hits you hard. You instantly see various musical influences at play, aggressive vocal style with a complex mix of guitar sound and synth. It can be easy to dismiss screamo music but this is much more, well written and well performed, layers of different sounds mixed together to make something sonic. No Hope For Miscarriage has a slow start that builds to a spectacular sound. Essentially a slow paced song overlaid with a ferocious vocal. Let Them Hang In The Halls carries this sound forward and raises the standard, the use of a guest vocalist adds a further dimension. Slap is my favourite track, the guitar riff catches you and draws you in. +473029 is a simple song with vocals just a list of messages on an answer machine from a child to her mother. Domestic Abuse is probably the best song here and is the lead single from the album. Guest vocalist Damien makes the song stand out with a more standard straightforward vocal tone used for the first time on the album. The album then flows onto She Wept As I Told Her and then Godforsaken. Joel Holmqvist guests and vocals really are outstanding. Death Is All I Think About brings the story to a close. It has a good variation of tempo throughout which leads to the outro, Drowning Regret. I said it is a concept album, I did mention the very grim content of the story. You can tell by the song titles that this is no uplifting, happy album. ItÆs dark and full of anger. I was a little disturbed after listening and this shows that real, well crafted art is a 2 powerful medium. You cannot take anything away from the sheer quality of this music. Layers of intricate music overlaid with rage and dark matter. Excellent stuff. ............................................................................ LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLEEEEE!
