It was not entirely clear why Backwater had to play this thankless role. Anyway, this three-piece got scathing reviews in nearly every German metal mag. It seemed like it was a kind of trend to write about them in a degrading manner. From my point of view, this was not fair. Perhaps many journalists were just overstrained with the sound of the band. That was understandable in some way, because Backwater passionately performed a very crude style of metal. They confronted the unsuspecting listener with a frantic mix of punk, thrash and speed metal that was strangely interrupted by rare doom metal moments. This alone was exceptional. In addition, the album┤s sound was dominated by a very powerful bass guitar while this instrument was barely audible on many outputs of other bands. Apart from that, the constantly crying voice and the music sometimes did not match perfectly. This led to a pretty chaotic flair. All of this taken together, the band sounded unique - for better or worse. The songwriting was filled with highs and lows. All compositions seemed to be created very spontaneously. This was both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, the music sounded fresh and lively. On the other hand, some of the songs seemed not to be well thought through. Due to the fact that the band had nearly permanently set the focus on speed, the drums were sporadically almost too fast for the guitars. A good example for this was "The Black Knight and the Holy Sword" (do not be confused by the monumental song title, it was just a primitive outburst of energy). Did they really want to record it in this way or was it just the rehearsal that had been accidentally used? I fear that we will never get the answer to this question. But despite these shortcomings, Backwater created primarily some dirty fun. In view of its sleazy appearance, the band delivered some very snotty tunes with painfully striking lyrics ("Too Much Alcohol"). A special mention goes to the outstanding "Shut Up and Love". A catchy chorus, an original riff and, of course, the exciting bass guitar line made this song to something special. And the restless bass guitarist kept rumbling. Just lend an ear to the following "Witchchaser". It presented the doom metal side of this multifarious contrarians. Supported by the bubbling bass, the song differed completely from their remaining eruptions. Only one further composition had a slight doom metal approach, too. However, nobody expected such a well elaborated, more than seven minutes lasting monster between all these punk-oriented brief outbreaks. Its epic and dramatic approach slowly developed its potential and offered the listener a welcome change. From a musical point of view, we do not speak about an outstanding record. But this album possesses a peerless character and the natural charm of the rebellious underground. The band did not follow the conventions of a sometimes narrow-minded scene, not only in Germany.
