The songs are all basic thrash...nothing too extremely fast, but no long passages of dull slow junk, either. There is a very precise comparison to a certain revered band that I shall reveal later, but for now I'll discuss some of the songs. The opener "Kick Your Dirt" is really cool, if perhaps a bit too long (most of the other songs are pretty short). Here the listener can begin to decipher the ludicrous lyrics, which include the word 'fuck' in all it's incarnations pretty frequently, but not in a ham-handed, "look how extreme we are by suddenly cussing constantly the way them there pop'ler diaper rock bands do"......(not that I'm SPECIFICALLY pointing the finger at Slayer!); it is just Chicago-land speak. There is nothing literate to be found in Burnt Offering's material, it is just good dumb fun! Before you get the idea that this is a whimsical farce, let me explain that the intent IS vicious thrash; it just comes off as being a bit TOO vicious, a bit TOO over-the-top (while never venturing into Piledriver territory). I imagine these fellows were quite young when they recorded/wrote these songs, and the naivete shows. And many times, that is a "magic" ingredient in albums. Probably in this one, in my opinion. "Leatherface" is another standout.....guess what it's about? "Beware the Axe" is great, with a murderous lyric line, but nothing to compare to the chorus of "Slaughterhouse Grizzle"......."listen to your gristle sizzle....SLAUGHTERHOUSE GRIZZLE!" "Pure Fuckin' Death" closes the album, and it is the best example of how juvenile these guys must've been. Unless it was a ill-advised attempt at cleverness, you will note that the vocals seem to be off-kilter with the music, and there are several times throughout the albums when a clumsy segue/time change can be detected. The music itself can be described, perhaps, as a cross between Overkill and Anthrax (early incarnations of both, of course); the much-touted "mosh part" can be heard in many songs, including the opener, but often there are vocals over these. But there is also a much more dirty and sinister vibe than the 2 mentioned bands exuded...but not to the point of being as wickedly heavy as Possessed. There is much variety of tempo on the album, and many, many satisfying thrash riffs which may have even been innovative at the time. There was some thought put behind these songs, they weren't just paint-by-numbers band-wagon jumpers. The SOUND of the band may be of interest to some of you. They sound almost exactly like an American thrash version of Celtic Frost! Though the guitars are usually much more "active" than CF, one can hear the rather muted "moaning" guitar tone that was the Frosties' trademark sound, and vocalist Hal, while phrasing completely differently from ol' Tommy Gabriel Warrior, has almost the same voice....but as with the guitar, it is difficult to recognize this at first because the music is so vastly different. By no means does Burnt Offering's music sound like Celtic Frost's music, but the two share really similar ingredients. The production on this is quite dated-sounding; in fact it has the primitive feel of the early Sodom and Destruction (perhaps a bit more "professional"), though aside from the fact it doesn't CRANK in your stereo it is very listenable. Who knows, mebbe my beat-up old cassette is worn out?
