Mingus, who had a deep love for Ellingtonian-styled ║║ ║║ extended forms and improvisation proves what an enormous capacity he ║║ ║║ had for all music in Epitaph, a score that is both a history of jazz ║║ ║║ and a condensed sampler of all of Mingus' music. The best thing to do ║║ ║║ is to block out two-plus hours of time, clear your mind, get comfortable,║║ ║║ put on Epitaph and ride into a brave new world-don't forget to check ║║ ║║ in with the libretto, a most valuable tour guide.
