You might say that Jane Monheit -- the young, New York-area jazz vocal prodigy
-- is the Christina Aguilera of the jazz world. But that statement could be easily
misconstrued. In fact, it's safe to say that Monheit, at a brilliantly talented 23
years of age, could serve as a crossover figure in jazz that might attract coveted
pop audiences. Not only does she sing like an angel, she also commands rare respect
among her more seasoned colleagues. On her 2000 debut, Never Neverland, Monheit
was joined by such veteran musicians as pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Ron Carter,
guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, and drummer Lewis Nash. Her delicate, nuanced phrasing
on that recording date felt rich and moving -- her talent immense and natural. In
truth, she nearly measured up to her accompaniment.
Monheit follows that with Come Dream with Me, her second collection of standards.
This time out, the singer has recruited stunning, top-of-their-game talents such
as trumpeter Tom Harrell, bassist Christian McBride, drummer Greg Hutchinson,
and guitarist Richard Bona. The song selection is characteristically conservative,
ranging from a heart-melting, disc-opening version of "Over the Rainbow" (an
uninspired choice, but just take a listen!) to a very romantic "A Case of You"
(with Bona). Yet its execution is impeccable; Monheit's voice simply irresistible;
and the arrangements spare and utterly tasteful. She may or may not be jazz's
answer to Christina or Britney, but she will most assuredly expose jazz to a wider,
more vibrant audience. And that's a shot in the arm jazz could use.
