However where all the things that were over the top and clichΘd about Piledriver made it excellent, the same things didnÆt work as well for Convict. The style of the album is somewhere in the realm of really cheesy traditional metal with some slight power metal overtones and the occasional thrash intrusions. Different bands I am reminded of while listening to the ridiculously titled ôGo aheadà Make my dayö were Piledriver, Judas Priest, Dio, and a couple of the songs even made me think of something a glam band like Poison or maybe White Snake could have produced. The album is every bit as farcical as the cover is. The whole thing sort of suffers from being all over the place. Some of the songs are on the thrashier side (Edge of the sword) while some are horribly cheesy, even glam sounding (Dreams are over, DonÆt turn away) and the rest fall somewhere in between ridiculous overdone clichΘs to pretty good traditional metal (or sometimes manage to be both at the same time, see the song Bloodsucker). Not a big deal if you like an album to have some variety, but the problem is that some parts are quality and some arenÆt. The production is sufficient; each instrument can be heard clearly and are all pretty even in the mix. The songs are very based around the riffs, the bass lines mostly follow the guitar, and the drumming is very simple yet effective in carrying the songs. The drums are assumed to be a drum machine, very likely from the sound however it is well programmed and doesnÆt sound out of place. The majority of the riffs are pretty mediocre; there are some that are pretty catchy however. There are also a couple solos here and there; the solo on ôEvil Eyesö is pretty cool although the rest of the song is pretty stupid due to sound effects and retarded lyrics. They also use some ludicrous sound effects on the vocals on ôManic Obsession.ö The song ôEdge of the Swordö sounds like it could have been a reject from the Piledriver album ôStay Uglyö so it is definitely one of the better tracks. The song ôBloodsuckerö is laughable yet awesome at the same time; Terry ôThe Conö Browning (Gord Kirchin) does some killer sounding high pitched vocals layered with his normal yells singing preposterous lyrics about a bloodsucking creature. The majority of his vocals are pretty similar to what he did on the Piledriver albums with some minor differences. It is easy to recognize it as him due to his voice having a unique sound. The song ôMetal warriorsö sounds like a bad Judas Priest impression, while ôDreams are overö reminds me of a Dio song. ôDonÆt turn awayö could probably pass off as a twisted sister song, I could see Dee Snider singing this one for some reason. The lyrics stay pretty consistent through the whole album, only in that they all sound idiotic and comical. It sounds like the record guy that created the fake band wrote the lyrics pieced together from what little he knew about thrash fans and what would appeal to them. They sing about Romans fighting, a bloodsucking creature, love, glorifying metal, rebellionà Nothing is really wrong with these topics, but somehow they manage to make every one of them extremely cheesy. The lyric writing is based around really basic rhymes, so a lot of times they end up saying something really stupid just to rhyme. Some examples: In ôBloodsuckerö he says ôThe creature could even be in the backseat of your car!!ö or something along those lines, or in ôMetal Warriorsö he says ôSo they can play them at there little parties, and mom and dad wonÆt throw fitsö There was a lot of other absurd lyrics that make me chuckle but those were a few that stood out. I would recommend this album to anyone who is really into Piledriver and is interested in hearing more stuff with the singer, or anyone into obscure records that likes heavy metal with small traces of thrash and power in the mix and heavy doses of cheese. Others will probably not be interested as it is mainly mediocre, even pretty horrible at times.
