S.N.A. 1:53 ------ 37:04 This band were one of the pioneers of the small Swedish 80Æs thrash metal movement alongside Mezzrow (earlier Necromancy), Hexenhaus (later Memento Mori), Midas Touch, and Fallen Angel. Initially they were just God, and this Almighty impersonation led to one demo (ôFour Wise Menö, 1988) before the name change which also brought the album reviewed here with it. The style is on the jollier, more carefree side of thrash similar to another Swedish formation, The Krixzhjalters (later Omnitron); in other words, expect a thrash/crossover mixture with some surprisingly stylish technical decisions thrown in the latter featured prominently on ôAllergy æEllö, a fine blend of direct straight-forward and more intricate thrashing. The less pretentious crossover spirit arrives with ôDrunk on Wineö, but more, darker surprises are in stall like the morose pounding rhythms on the early Celtic Frost-esque ôViking Talesö which also smells epic in a way not very remote from the mid-period Bathory exploits. No gloom, no doom on ôAlso the Deaf Have Earsö which is a brisk short instrumental piece so far the album having moved throughout several metal flavours, but ôMarianneö is an intense surging headbanger, an uncompromising straight-to-the-point number which is superseded by the more technical, more varied proposition ôThe Lightö, a nervy technical shredder worthy of the mentioned Midas Touch. ôSaintsö may be deemed a pullback after this hyper-active showdown being a calmer power/thrash mix, but ôLove of Messiahö shows the guysÆ love of blitzkrieg vigorous thrash this explosive piece finished with a superb more intricate pirouette. One more instrumental served as an epitaph, ôS.N.A.ö, a brief sombre, doom-laden interpretation of the Funeral March, not as virtuoso-prone, and consequently not as pessimistic as the one provided y their compatriots Candlemass on ôNightfallö a year earlier. The Swedish roster could only have benefited from such episodic showings also having in mind that thrash remained a relatively untapped territory for the country during the 80Æs, and although this act can be added to the quite voluminous one-album-wonder group, itÆs worth of note that there was some kind of a follow-up to their saga when the drummer Tom Hallback formed a new team with members of the obscure thrashers HysteÆriah, the merger logically named HysteÆriah G.B.C.. The style was more direct thrash with not as much crossover-prone optimism, but with more frequent technical escapades which some fans may find the better option.
