GUITARFIRE100 are a strangely-named Montreal pop-punk band here with their debut EP Stealing Paintings. The band pack a lot into just three short tunes, with their straightforward, punk rock musicianship backing up some catchy melodies. Stealing Paintings isnÆt the most diverse release, but if you dig yourself some catchy, almost power-pop-esque rock, GUITARFIRE100 are worth checking out. The EP starts off with the song ôKeep It Casual.ö As pop as it gets for the band, this tune has a bit of a Bowling For Soup vibe to it and outlines the bandÆs sense of humour and ability to create some great melodies with its chorus. Moving along, we get to ôCul-De-Sac.ö More sombre than the previous track, this is still as catchy as can be but has a little more room to breathe in its opened-up bridge and slightly slower instrumental. All in all, ôCul-De-Sacö is an obvious highlight on the album with a great pop-punk sensibility and some powerful, Matt Skiba-esque singing at the tail end of the song. Stealing Paintings wraps up with the song ôHonestly.ö This closing tune is my favourite on the EP, with some intricate-but-not-overbearing drum lines, pretty guitar progressions, and a catchy as all fuck chorus that repeats just enough times to make me want to start the song all over again. Stealing Paintings is a great pop-punk release. GUITARFIRE100 have a great handle on pop songwriting and the musicianship to bulk up these three short songs. IÆm curious to hear a longer release from the band, especially if they step outside of the box a bit more. And, to address the ôCul-De-Sacö line ôYou said you always longed to go to Saskatoon for no other reason than you thought it sounded cute,ö itÆs not too shabby, a lot of maple bugs this time of year though. In fact, I think I see my dog trying to eat one right nowà ............................................................................ LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLEEEEE!
