Run for Your Life 4:27 21:12 As one of many female-fronted bands that popped up in the 80's, Hellion had kind of a rough start with a mediocre EP, but managed to get more power to their sound. Their other EP, "Postcards from the Asylum" is the polar opposite of their self-titled EP, and a vast improvement to their career. It's still not perfect by any means, but at least it's a lot more entertaining to listen to. Sure it's been released after their album "Screams in the Night", but if you're looking for rare EPs from this band, I think "Postcards from the Asylum" would be a better choice. Of course it might not be as good as the original by Judas Priest, Hellion's cover of Exciter is actually pretty convincing. The vocals of Ann Boleyn (not to be confused with the second wife of Henry VIII) handle quite nicely imitating Rob Halford, and when she does so, she doesn't sound like she's trying to hard. She doesn't need to, her own voice carries enough power and swagger to match that of Halford's. Sure the band has made some dramatic changes to their version of the song (the iconic riff at the beginning of the song is absent and towards the end of the song, they're playing different solos), but at the same time, it's what makes this version more of Hellion's own. Some artists like to make some songs their own, and Hellion pulled it off with "Exciter". The other songs are worth a listen. Take for instance "Nevermore!". It's one of those hard, crunching songs that blast their way using a fast time signature. Yes, I get that it's a little cliched in terms of lyrics, and the power chords they use are somewhat generic as well, but this song is way better than anything on the band's self-titled EP. We also get an instance of horror-like sounds with the song, "The Evil One". It begins at a slower pace, but that pace is punctuated using a dark, eerie and sinister tone. Needless to say, it's perfectly acceptable for a song this slow to pass. Towards the end, it accelerates to another, hard and driving gem. It might not be the most perfect of songs, as it does seem to use the same chord patterns as "Nevermore!", but even during the fast part, the soloing contains some odd notes that add to the chaos. "Run for Your Life" has kind of a NWOBHM-like feel to it, as it's fast-paced and contains some slightly formulaic riffing. Even so, it's the fast pace that keeps me listening. Okay, this EP might not be the most original thing ever to come out, even during the 80's, but there's quite enough good to be said about it. "Postcards from the Asylum" is a greeting from a band that has improved dramatically since their early days. As you may have guessed, my biggest complaint is that some of the songs are a bit generic after listening to other bands.
