Arcade Warriors 4:52 ------ 43:23 With the strange album that The Death Of The Artists was, any followup was bound to draw fairly intense scrutiny, as this album has drawn from me, to determine just what on earth is going on with these eclectic Italians. No, theyÆre hardly Sonata Arctica, but some of HighlordÆs naming conventions and even sound changes in recent years have been slightly reminiscent of what happened when a certain Finnish power metal superpower went completely off the tracks. Now granted, I did not dislike The Death Of The Artists, but I certainly assessed it as irregular and a bit of a slip. The Warning After doesnÆt provide an immediate indication of exactly what it wants to do, either. Opener ôThe Goggle Mirrorö is strangely titled, mid-tempo, and not too hooky. A poor choice for an opener, in my mind. ôBrothers To The Endö, however, brings some good vocal melodies and tight guitar work to the table, and after the odd beginning, it is here that the album begins to take shape and coalesce into a reasonably enjoyable whole. ôStanding In The Rainö brings back some signature Highlord vocal work, switched up with a few harsh vocals and a slower tempo, but recognizable nonetheless. ôNo More Heroesö and ôIn This Wicked Worldö highlight the album for me. Partially because they remind me of the bandÆs more energetic work from prior years, and partially because they deliver the most memorable choruses. Ballad ôOf Tears And Rhymesö is quite respectable, and not one that I find myself skipping. Guitar and synth work is professional, as you might expect, throughout the album, but thereÆs often something missing to give the album a necessary boost of staying power. Andrea MarchisioÆs vocal lines have have become less and less a focus of the bandÆs energy in recent years, and that same songwriting behavior is evident throughout much of this album. This goes hand in hand with one of my chief issues that I face when attempting to enjoy this album. The Warning After, like its predecessor, is only partially a power metal album (though the band still identifies strongly with the genre), and while still enjoyable, doesnÆt appeal to me in the same way that say, When The Aurora Falls does. Many of the same elements are at work, and perhaps more committed Highlord fans than I will find this album to be very attractive, but the reduced emphasis on keys, vocal hooks, and generally slowing everything down has by now convinced me that I will be revisiting this album only occasionally, and probably not in full. In some ways, the vigor of HighlordÆs past seems to have dropped out of the music. While I wouldnÆt say this album is half-hearted, it does seem to lack conviction. I would recommend this album to committed Highlord fans and those who enjoy fairly streamlined heavy/power metal. I think that many fans of Euro power might find themselves a bit less enthralled by this work. --- IÆm not sure whether Highlord require much of an introduction, as whilst theyÆve been peddling their brand of Italian power metal since the turn of the century, it doesnÆt seem many people have heard of them. I was turned onto the band via their sophomore effort When the Aurora Falls which was a solid slab of Euro power, from a time when the genre was becoming oversaturated. Since then IÆve tried to keep up with them, although around the advent of their album Instant Madness I lost off. Here we have their seventh full-length, the dubiously titled The Warning After. I canÆt say I had much in the way of expectation, but I was interested to hear how a band IÆd cut my teeth on was shaping up as of present. One thing for sure, is that this isnÆt the speedy Italian power metal band I was enamoured with in my youth. No, Highlord seem to have very much followed the fortunately fading trend of toning down the speed. I guess the change was evident in the jump from MedusaÆs Coil to Instant Madness, but here the band feel a lot more sober and refined, which unfortunately should be seen as a bad thing in this case. Highlord are a band I want to hear in the up-tempo predominantly, and here they set on a middling path in terms of pacing. The first half of the album is in particular a slog through mid-paced fare, and whilst not a massive problem in and of itself, becomes one when coupled with subpar songwriting. Here Highlord remind me of the trend which threatened the genre from around 2004 û 2009, when many acts opted to include lower tuned guitars, modern metal conventions, growls, and all that other crap I associate with bad power metal from that dark period. Fortunately The Warning After isnÆt that offensive, but thereÆs a lot of elements present here which affect my enjoyment. From the aforementioned pacing to the guitar sound in general, this just doesnÆt gel well with me. Especially considering the Highlord I remember fondly, dishing out cheese smothered, forgotten gems like ôFrozen Heavenö. Thankfully there is some good stuff here, the majority of which is housed in the latter half of the album. ôNo More Heroesö is a fun romp through classic power metal territory, reminding me of Sonata Arctica, Dreamtale or Twilightning. Why the rest of the album couldnÆt have dished out the Euro power goods is beyond me, itÆs clear these guys can still pen some damn fine Euro-cheese. ôArcade Warriorsö follows suit, with a welcome guest spot from Ralf Scheepers. Man, why isnÆt the rest of the album like this? On the whole, this definitely isnÆt what I personally wanted to hear from Highlord. Those who like the more modern school of ever-so-slightly progressively tinged power metal might find some joy here, especially if acts like Masterplan and such float your boat. As for me, I think IÆll stick with their older material, unless they decide to dust off the old double kick pedal and synthesizer.                                                                                                     ▀▀░                                                                                                                ░▄▀                                  ▄█▀                                             ░▄           ░▐███░               ▀█░▄▄▄                    ▄░       ▀█░░                      ░           ▀▀░                                         ▄  ░                                          ▄     █          ▀                 ▄              ▄█▄ ▄ ██▄         ▀░▀     ▄         ▀                ▀░▀   ▀         ▀▀████████▀░                   ▀ ▄      ░                      ░░       ░▀██▀                    ▀██▄                ▄               ▐     ░      ░  █▀▄    ▐▓▓▌   █                    ▄   ▄▄       ░                    ▄▄▌█  ▄▄▓▓▓▀  ▄                      ▄ ▀   ████      ░                   ▐███▌  ░ ░                  ▄██▀     ▄▄██▄▄           ░           ▄▄███▄▄ ▄  ▓                         ▐▓▓▌  ░   ▓████▄        ▀          ▀    ▓█████▓  ▀ ▄                           ▀▓▓▓▄▄   ▐▓███ ▌                       ▌█████      ▀██▄   ▄                ░▄  ▀▀██▄▐████ ▌▐ ▌▓                ▓▐ ▌█▓███       ▐▓▓▌ ▀░▀           █    █  ░ ░▓▐████▄▌▐ ▌▌ ▌▌▐ ▌▐▄ ▐▐·▌▌▐▐ ▐ ▄█████    ▄▄▓▓▓▀                            ▓ ▓▐████ ▌▐ ▌▌ ▌▌▐ ▌▐▐▓▐▐ ▌▌▐▐ ▐ ▌█████ ▄█▓▀▀  ▄░ ░            ▄▄▄░      ▓     ░▐████▄▌▐▄▌▌▄▌▌▐ ▌▐▐▄▐▐▄▌▄▐▐▓▐▄▌█████ ▓     █               █████      ▐▄░   ▓▐████ ▌▐ ▌▌ ▌▌▐ ▌▐▐ ▐▐ ▌▌▐▐▓▐ ▌█████   ▓░   ▄         ▐▓    █▓███░    ▓▐█░▄▄  ▐████ ▌▐ ▌▌ ▌▌▐ ▌▐█ ▐▐ ▌▌▐▐ ▐ ▌█████    ▄██▄ ▀ ▄      █▌    █████▓   ██▀█▀▀   ▐█▓██ ▌▐ ▌▌ ▌▌▐ ▌▐▐ ▐▐ ▌▌▐▐ ▐ ▌███▓█   ▐█▓██▓   ▀██▄ ▀██▀   █████▓░    ▓█▌    ▐████▓▌▐▄▌▌▄▌▌▄ ▌▐▐▄▐▐▓▌▌▐▐▄▐▄▌█████   ▐████▌    ▐▓▓▌▓█▌   ▄█▓███▄░     ▐█▄▓  ▐████ ▌▐ ▌▌ ▌▌▐ ▌▐▐ ▐▐ ▌▌▐▐ ▐ ▀█▓███   ▐████▌ ▄▄▓▓▓▀  █▓  ████████▄▄▓ ▄█████▌ ▐████ ▌▐ ▌▌ ▌▌▐ ▌▐▐ ▐▐ ▌▌▐▐▓▐ ▌█████   ▓████▌░ ▄▄   ▄▄█▄▄ ██████████████████████████████▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄     █████  ░██▓████▓██▓▓██████ █░█████▄▀█▄░████████▄▄▄▄▄██████▓████████░██████▄▄▄▄▄███████░▄██░█░█████████ ▓██▀█████▓░░ ░ ░ ░ ░ ░ ░░░▓███▓█████ ████████▓ ▓██▓▐████▓ ▓██ █░███ █░██████▓ ███▓▄▀█▓ ▓ ▓█████▓███████ ▓███ ░▄▄▄▓████▓ ▓████████▓ ▓██████▓ ▓████▓
