the description of the ritualistic slaughter and consumption of rival
warrior tribes which would find its greatest horror with the description
of finding the skulls of Children in the bottom of a bowl of soup served
to Staden. Of course no archaeological findings support this accusation
but it helped portray the native Amazonian tribes as savage enemies,
uncivilized and murderous without moral. However unpalatable the
consumption of dead human flesh might sustain itself as one of the
greater fears and horrors of humanity, the belief that this act empowers
and strengthens the eater of man-flesh with the essence of the conquered
was agreed upon by myriad warrior peoples (and a few serial killers)
across the globe. Sydney, Australia quintet Horrisonous obsess over the
follies of human meat nearly as much as they do over the effective
bludgeon that old school death/doom savagery brings to humanity, without
all of the bones and hair to worry about later.
If your mind drifted off to the old barfed-up, lo-fi Carcass-assed death
metal from the early Razorback Records line-up youÆre actually not as
far off as youÆd think but refocus towards the mid 00Æs era of Coffins
and Hooded Menace. The sapient snarls of vocalist Yonn McLaughlin, who
is best known as ex-Temple Nightside and current Pestilential Shadows
drummer Basilysk, bring unexpected and nearly blackened rasping to an
flawlessly rendered mix of Asphyx and Bolt Thrower influenced
skull-boiling. Deep and darkly rich flavors keep those olden mid-paced
death metal ways dancing on the auditory palate thanks to the
memberships of ex-Backyard Mortuary and Bludgeoner folks but, æA
Culinary CacophonyÆ is not at all iteration upon æLure of the OccultÆ
despite a few small similarities. Naturally the menacing death/doom
style of æThe Plague DoctorsÆ (2016) EP survives on this debut
full-length, though it is undeniable that the inclusion of drummer Aled
Powell (Golgothan Remains) gives Horrisonous a greater pool of blood to
marinate within.
No doubt there is a twinge of æFulfill the CurseÆ style riffing to be
found here but more apt comparisons might find Horrisonous
shoulder-to-shoulder with bands like Innsmouth, æAngel of the Sixth
OrderÆ era Armoured Angel (see: ôA Tale of Matriphagyö) and Torchureæs
long-forgotten æBeyond the VeilÆ. The deep register of the guitars on æA
Culinary CacophonyÆ offer a modern edged sound but the performance
dynamics reek only of the oldest schools of death thatÆd marry with
passages of doom before itÆd be labeled as any such hybrid. Entrenched
in filth but not raw or lacking in modern fidelity Horrisonous offer a
great balance of serious, sinister epics and kitschy retro death metal
shock value while placing the guitar movements as the main driver of
pace and progression. The crossover between Autopsy and the early
Stockholm death metal scene applies to the faster paced points of æA
Culinary CacophonyÆ but the bulk of this record is dynamically rhythmic
beyond the scope of those æold schoolÆ counterparts, closer in overall
effect to Grave Miasma or the aforementioned Innsmouth minus some of the
black metal influences.
Whatever style or era theyÆre pushing through Horrisonous consistently
represent the most effective spectrum of mid-paced death metal with
powerful doom metal riffs that highlight builds and bridges of more
intricate guitar work. This focus on shifting dynamics isnÆt wholly
unpredictable but itÆll take at least 4-5 listens before youÆll likely
be anticipating the movements of æA Culinary CacophonyÆ. The themes of
disease and cannibalism, among other subjects, arenÆt groundbreaking or
particularly memorable but the seasoned death metal fandom will
appreciate their uncomplicated message of aggrandized misanthropic
horror. This album clicked with me in terms of death/doom style and
classic death metal tonality but, I wonÆt say I ever found a thread of
riffs that really knocked me on my ass. By the tenth full listen I felt
IÆd extracted the vital juices from the mushed-up gore of Horrisonous
without absorbing any new found power and without the warriors blood
rage coursing through me, IÆd say the album is on the average side of
things in terms of songwriting. Every other aspect of the music is on
point placing the quality of this release beneath the heightened
conceptual legacies of similar groups like Slugathor/Desecresy but above
a group like Decaying. There is yet room to move even further into their
own here and for that reason I can highly recommend Horrisonousæ debut
as solid old school death/doom but also as a band to look out for in the
future. For preview youÆre limited to one track but IÆd suggest hearing
both ôKuru Worshipö and ôA Tale of Matriphagyö before making any final
judgement of this fine album.

These Australian chefs have the recipe to creating a nasty and
nutritious dose of death metal; the kind that raises the hairs on your
skin from the moment the first vocal is sung, the fist riff is played
and the first stroke of the snare drum is applied. As it has been from
the beginning I discovered death metal, the artwork is the sole
contributor responsible for my peaked interest in this gem released on
the 22nd of January, 2019 through Memento Mori. Having resembled and
brought back images of a scene out of Hannibal (2001), I could not
resist temptation, and IÆm glad I did not. What is to be witnessed on
this massacre of ethics and decency, is death metal that shape-shifts
constantly to invoke peaking levels of bliss as it strokes your cravings
maliciously. Even If the artwork had not been as vile as it is, reading
through the names of the tracks would have been more than enough to suck
me in; ôFlesh Presented for Orgasmic Tormentö?, thatÆs evil.
On HorrisonousÆ debut titled A Culinary Cacophony, youÆre given 41
minutes of putrid lyrical content, classic death metal riffs that change
course often and unpredictably as they experiment with slow decomposing
doom metal and black metal tremolo picking. You get vocals that range
from goring gutturals and raw black metal snarls to a drumming
performance that displays both patience and discipline in its execution.
With an opening the likes of ôKuru Worshipö, Horrisonous set their
standards so high that I questioned their ability to keep it. My fears
were dispelled due to the bandÆs ability to not just maintain that level
of quality, but exceed it as well. By carefully incorporating all of the
above mentioned techniques into their sound, Horrisonous managed to
create something that exhibits the bandÆs ability to play fluently when
transitioning to and from death and doom metal sections among other
genres. Horrisonous as a unit plays with a very calculative and precise
level of effectiveness; they never sound sloppy, the music never leaves
you feeling overburdened, instead you are aroused with delight as you
drift among diverse musical disciplines.
ôA Tale of Matriphagyö exquisitely demonstrates how much of a wrecking
force Horrisonous is as a unit. Borrowing classic death metal and mixing
it with melodic metal, black metal and melodic death/doom riffing; the
song reeks of contrasting emotions with melancholy being one that
appears towards the ending of the track in an attempt to cast a gloomy
aura of the record. The fact that they experimented with a debut
full-length tells of the high confidence existing in their musical
abilities. Some bands experiment to their own detriment by just throwing
things into their music that fails to compliment or even sustain what
little enjoyment is present on the effort. Adding to the point made,
Horrisonous not only experimentÆs during the total runtime of A Culinary
Cacophony, but they convey a steady-handed and level-headed approach.
They know just how much of any element is enough; thus implying having
the knowledge and wisdom of where and how to exit those experimental
moments. Though using various combinations to generate an appeasing
record , that Australian death metal dressing follows A Culinary
Cacophony with unfettered strides. Yes this is quite the blend of
styles, however; the chefs brewing this broth appear to be familiar with
the Too many cooksà proverb.
There is a nod to DeicideÆs ôSacrificial Suicideö in terms of the
verseÆs pattern and another to Iron Maiden in the form of the final and
lengthiest track titled ôThe Number of the Feastö. Both entries exercise
the same discipline exhibited in the beginning and are among the
stronger songs to be discovered on A Culinary Cacophony.
A Culinary Cacophony is a solid album in which I hope garners the
attention it deserves. Many can take a few lessons from this impressive
debut; as it displays the importance of good organization where the
implementation of diverse styles is concerned. Another win for
Australia, whom in my opinion play death metal with much efficiency and
