Bye Bye Baby 4:36 ------ 35:38 We know of Krokus as that "80's hair band" that opened for Def Leppard among others and cranking out catchy (if not annoying) ditties like "Midnite Maniac", but if you can believe it, there was once a time where Krokus was just a simple hard rock/heavy metal band from Switzerland. Here's another mindblowing fact - Marc Storace isn't even involved at the time when this album "Painkiller" (otherwise known as "Pay It in Metal"), was recorded. At that time, Chris Von Rohr was the singer. If you always remember Krokus as a goofy glam band, prepare to have your preconceptions smashed 'cos we've got a very effective album here. The very first thing you'll notice with this album is that the nasally, high-pitched vocals of Marc Storace that annoyed many of us are nonexistent. Instead, we have Chris von Rohr singing in a tenor/falsetto voice that is sort of a cross between Guy Speranza of Riot and John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival. It's a sound that many would expect to come out of a vocalist that was prevalent during the '70s. For this reason, I would say that "Pay It in Metal" is one of Krokus' more finer albums since the vocals aren't so much of an annoyance as they are supplements to boost the sound. While we are on the subject of the sound, it's pretty much a sign of the times. You'll hear '70s hard rock in nearly every song on here including "Killer", which has sort of a bluesy hard rock hook with a catchy chorus. The song on this album that has the most of the '70s vibe, though, has got to be "Get Out of My Mind". It's got kind of a slow shuffle-like tempo, a bluesy overtone, and a sing-along chorus. It's a silly song, really, but hey, anything that isn't that godawful cover of "Ballroom Blitz", right? That means that if you heard this album first, you'd think that Krokus had come from the streets of Los Angeles. Of course you'd think the same thing if you heard the horrendous "Change of Address" album as well. This album is a far cry from anything Krokus had released in the '80s. While anything that came out at that time would be a dated piece of that decade, "Pay It in Metal" would be a trademark of the '70s. Unfortunately, the band would never get as far with Chris von Rohr on vocals. He was demoted to guitar playing duty when Marc Storace showed up.
